TimeSys supports carrier-grade upgrades for Linux 2.6

TimeSys Corp. has launched an upgrade program that it says will help telecommunications and network equipment providers quickly upgrade to Carrier Grade Linux Requirements Definition version 2.0.2 (CGL 2.0) of the Open Source Development Labs (OSDL). Adding the features of the CGL 2.0 spec will provide major improvements in performance, reliability, security, and availability for OEMs now fielding Linux 2.6 distributions on PowerPC and x86 based gear, according to TimeSys.

“We are extremely pleased at the rate at which Carrier Grade Linux is becoming a key part of telecommunications solutions,” said Tom Hanrahan, engineering director at OSDL. The early support of CGL 2.0 by TimeSys, he added, “will speed the integration of this functionality in network devices.”

OSDL released CGL 2.0 in October of 2003. Earlier this month, it released CGL 3.0, which is expected to have an impact in the real world some time in 2006.

According to TimeSys, the company's CGL 2.0 Upgrade Program is offered as an annual subscription and includes:

  • Upgrade of any 2.6-based PowerPC or x86 Linux distribution certified by TimeSys to a complete OSDL CGL 2.0 distribution within 30 days of joining the program
  • Ongoing access to the latest open source updates
  • Advanced tools to enable further customization of CGL 2.0 distributions to developer specifications

The upgrades are available for a range of PowerPC- and x86-based platforms, the company says.
