The Open Source Development Labs (OSDL) and Free Standard Group (FSG) merged on Jan. 21, creating the Linux Foundation, a single entity aiming to take responsibility for Linux standardization, promotion, and protection. LinuxDevices.com wasted no time interviewing Jim Zemlin, the new mega-organization's executive director.

The interview features tantalizing hints about how Zemlin and the Foundation plan to merge significant OSDL specifications like Carrier Grade Linux (CGL) and Desktop Linux (DTL) with the Linux Standards Base (LSB), the influential, modular mega-standard created by the FSG. Among other topics, the interview also offers:

  • Glimpses into Zemlin's revenue generation plans for the organization
  • The potential for consolidation with other standards bodies and industry groups
  • Zemlin's outlook on the computing market in general, and where Linux could be five years from now
