Two new Motorola Pentium III SBCs Support Linux

Both products support operation under the Linux operating system.
“Across our markets, our customers are demanding more performance as they are driven by advances in their own technologies such as the need for high resolution image processing or the impact that high bandwidth voice and data is having on the telecom industry,” said Steve Kulpa, director of Motorola Computer Group's Cross Industry Business Unit (CIBU). “MCG's support of Intel's Pentium III represents a major step for our customers to densely pack more processing power than ever before on to a board and to continue to provide product longevity with these long-life processors.”
PATX5000 ATX Dual Pentium III Motherboard
The PATX5000 motherboard is a high performance, long-life embedded platform for operating systems such as Linux and Windows NT. It is a dual PGA370 socket design utilizing Intel's latest high-speed 840 chipset capable of 133 MHz front-side-bus performance, as well as support for up to 4GB of RAMbus memory, both 64-bit/66 MHz and 32-bit/33 MHz PCI buses and 4X AGP graphics. The PATX5000 supports Pentium III processors in a new package known as flip-chip pin grid array, or FC-PGA, package and 840 chipset.
The 840 chipset supports Symmetrical Multiprocessing (SMP) and dual RAMbus memory each providing up to 400 MHz bus speed. This motherboard brings the benefits of a socketed dual processor configuration, dual RDRAM memory channels, and a high-level of integration within the small footprint of an ATX motherboard. It is designed for high-speed embedded applications in industries such as data communications, telecommunications, industrial automation, and imaging.
With the addition of memory expansion “trees”, the PATX5000 can use today's PC100 memory (i.e., DIMMs). For OEMs looking to extend previous investments in ISA cards, the PATX5000 continues to provide legacy ISA support. For OEMs requiring a high degree of integration in a standard ATX board, the PATX5000 offers dual-channel Ultra2 SCSI and dual 10/100 Ethernet capability. This reserves PCI and ISA slots for OEMs' proprietary or value-added functions. In addition, the PATX5000 provides a Type II CompactFlash socket, watchdog and interval timers, and hardware monitoring features.
CPV5400 Single-slot CompactPCI Pentium III SBC
MCG also introduces the CPV5400 Pentium III processor card, the first in a line of MCG CompactPCI products supporting the new Intel chipset. The CPV5400 is a single slot design and supports one high speed PCI Mezzanine Card (PMC) site that can be used to expand the on-board I/O required for applications such as high-end communication networks. The product's performance meets speed requirements for high-speed applications such as semiconductor manufacturing, robotic control, voice over IP, data communications, and medical imaging.
The CPV5400 supports a single socket 370 and the latest high-speed 840 chipset capable of 133-400 MHz front-side-bus performance. The CPV5400 can be configured using different SDRAM from 128MB-1GB and dual RAMbus memory (from 1GB-4GB) mezzanines to help enable superior performance and flexibility. These speed and memory enhancements will serve as a starting place for next-generation embedded boards, offering a minimum five-year lifecycle, compared to the typical 9-12 month product lifecycle for desktop applications.
