Nov 11, 2004 — by Henry Kingman — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewsOpen Source Development Labs (OSDL) has accepted venture capital (VC) firm Voyager Capital as its first VC member. The firm appears interested in investing in open source companies in Oregon. The OSDL has long associated closely with VC firms, especially those developing businesses in the Pacific Northwest.
For example, the OSDL currently partners with OVP on investments in Oregon that include a Linux incubator. And, OSDL Board Member Larry Augustin, founder of VA Linux (later VA Software), is a partner with Azure Capital.
OSDL CEO Stuart Cohen, a frequent speaker at VC investment conferences worldwide, said, “We view Voyager as a significant contributor to Oregon's IT industry, with investments in such companies as Qsent and Kryptiq. We believe other venture firms will get involved in OSDL.”
Frank Gill, a member of Voyager's advisory board, said, “By joining OSDL, Voyager has the unique opportunity to support the OSS/Linux industry as a whole as well as play into the strengths of the Oregon technology community.”
Voyager's managing director, Erik Benson, said, “We are seeing increased business development in Oregon with an uptick in early stage term sheets, the return of successful serial entrepreneurs to the region, and the utilization of open source technologies by these entrepreneurs to build their products and services.”
