Virtual MIPS ‘Malta’ platform supports Linux-based device development

Dec 9, 2002 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — views

Virtio Corporation announced an evaluation and development environment for system-on-chip (SOC) platforms based upon MIPS32 and MIPS64 processor cores. Co-developed by Virtio and MIPS Technologies, the tool will help engineers conduct hands-on evaluations of real time operating systems (RTOSes), tool chains, and software on a virtual Malta Development Board.

The VPMM Virtual Platform for MIPS Malta, which is free of charge for a full function 30-day evaluation license, allows developers to boot the OS and run application programs. There are also tutorials on how to set up a complete software development environment with the installation of popular tools chains (including LynuxWorks BlueCat Linux). The VPMM can be accessed from either one of the companies' Web sites (www.virtio.com and www.mips.com).

The download contains Virtio's VPMM Virtual Platform modeling the Malta development board; RTOSes, application software; MIPSsim (instruction accurate and cycle accurate); Virtio's ISS; instructions and documentation; an evaluation license agreement; and collateral material. The download also demonstrates LynuxWorks' BlueCat Linux, Wind River Systems VxWorks, Microsof Windows CE 3.0 and .NET, and Green Hills Integrity RTOSs running on Virtio's VPMM Virtual Platform.
