Whitepaper: Data Management in STB Electronic Programming Guides

Issaquah, WA — — The electronic programming guide (EPG), which enables digital television subscribers to interactively browse, search, filter and customize program listings, adds a significant data management dimension to the design of new set-top boxes. Seeking a proven solution, a handful of vendors have begun incorporating off-the-shelf database technology into their set-top boxes.

McObject's new white paper, “Data Management in Set-Top Box Electronic Programming Guides”, reflects lessons learned in such real-life projects. Its author, McObject Principal Architect Andrei Gorine, has led core data management projects for leading set-top box manufacturers, and the paper encapsulates his knowledge of digital TV standards and the set-top box technology environment, EPG data management requirements, and typical data objects and interrelationships.

Examining solutions, the paper focuses on one relatively new type of data management, the in-memory database system (IMDS), which improves data management performance and minimizes resource demands through a streamlined design. For set-top box developers considering a database solution, this white paper can jump-start development and improve embedded software results.
