Thin client and server-centric leader Wyse Technology has joined the Open Source Development Labs (OSDL), and will participate in the Linux desktop steering committee. Wyse is the only OSDL member focused solely on thin client solutions, and it plans to help lead initiatives and establish parameters for the Linux desktop.

“We [hope to] support and foster the growth of desktop Linux and server-based technologies,” said Mike DeNeffe, Senior Director of the Wyse Winterm business line. “As the fastest growing segment of the thin-client market, Linux thin clients represent a real opportunity to help advance the overall Linux desktop movement to the enterprise.”

According to IDC, as quoted by Wyse, Linux is the fastest growing OS segment in the thin client market, with more than 20 percent of the overall market and a 60 percent annual growth rate. IDC has ranked Wyse first among thin client vendors seven years running, according to Wyse, which claims to own about 40 percent of the overall thin-client market.

“Linux is gaining acceptance in the thin-client market and that acceptance will only increase as companies like Wyse offer their expertise and success in the server-centric and open source solution arena,” said Stuart Cohen, CEO of OSDL.

Bill Weinberg, OSDL's new Open Source Architecture Specialist, will present with Wyse at the upcoming Birds of a Feather presentation series on August 3rd at the LinuxWorld conference in San Francisco. They will discuss the acceleration and key ingredients of Thin Linux adoption.

Wyse today announced an upgrade of its Linux based OS for thin clients to the 2.6 kernel branch, as well as a new line of Linux-based thin clients.

Independent software vendor (ISV) Veritas also joined the OSDL today, to participate in the Data Center working group.
