Article: Wiring a vintage teletype to the Internet using Linux

There are a number of electronic projects I have been wanting to build which require an embedded computer system. Among of these are:

  • Networked audio player for our home entertainment center
  • Networked electronic picture frame
  • Video and audio home security system

IDC study confirms demise of the “unconnected PDA”

A new research study from market analyst IDC confirms that potential growth for the “unconnected PDA” market is shifting to voice-enabled devices including mobile phones and “converged mobile devices,” which combine the data capabilities of PDAs with the voice communication capabilities of mobile phones. Toolsuite creates embedded databases for Linux-based systems

Encirq Corp. announced a suite of technology, tools, and components for creating databases for embedded systems and devices. Encirq 3e Database Suite for Embedded Systems can be used to create “the world's smallest embedded databases -- often in less than 50K,” the company said. Applications are said to cover a wide range of markets including cell phones, autos, and industrial systems. (more…)

POSIX standard updated, Realtime POSIX pending

The IEEE and The Open Group have announced an extension to POSIX Certification to cover the Latest POSIX Standard. A future phase will cover the Realtime POSIX profiles. (more…)

FSMLabs RTLinux now supports Firewire “b”, GigEthernet

FSMLabs' LNet — a POSIX API real-time networking component of its RTLinux offering — now supports both the high speed “b” version of IEEE 1394 as well as Gigabit Ethernet. Embedded developer study probes debuggers, HW/SW focus, Linux IP concerns

A brand-new Linux-based PDA is due to hit the market this September, at a price of $299 (USD). Softfield, which took on support of the Agenda VR3 following the demise of Agenda Computing, said it will release the entirely-new MX-7 in early Sep., 2003. (more…)

Timesys brings embedded Linux RTOS to Kontron CompactPCI boards

Creditcard-sized XScale SBC boasts extensive embedded Linux support

InHand Electronics Inc. announced immediate availability of the third generation of its tiny “Fingertip” single-board computer family. The credit card sized Fingertip3 is InHand's first SBC to be based on an Intel XScale microprocessor, and also provides substantially enhanced power management capabilities and an SD Card slot. VIA adopts 5-year processor lifespans to support embedded designs

VIA announced a commitment to a 5-year product lifespan for its Eden ESP processor, in order to support the lifecycle requirements of manufacturers using the chip in mobile device and embedded system designs. The company ascribes the growing popularity of its Eden ESP processor in embedded applications to the device's low power consumption, native x86 compatibility, and digital media capabilities. (more…)
