AMD showcases Linux-based PDA at LinuxWorld

AMD will demonstrate a Linux-based PDA solution at LinuxWorld this week. The technology demonstration consists of the Metrowerks OpenPDA software platform running on the latest version of AMD's Alchemy Solutions Mobile Handheld Reference Design Kit (RDK). (more…)

Opie open source GUI/PIM project releases version 1.0

Report sizes up Intel’s x86 competition

A report released by In-Stat/MDR takes a look at Intel's competitors who make x86 compatible processors. Despite industry pundits' expectation that they would not survive, AMD and other Intel x86 competitors (such as VIA and Transmeta) have subsisted and even, at times, thrived, the report finds — this, in spite of the economic roller coaster of the past several years. Red Hat sues SCO, establishes $1M GPL legal defense fund

Red Hat launched two efforts “to protect Red Hat Linux customers and the worldwide Linux industry” today. The first is a lawsuit filed against The SCO Group, and the second is the establishment of a legal defense fund “to further protect the integrity of Open Source software and the Open Source community.” Additionally, Red Hat noted that it has pledged one million dollars to the legal defense fund. VIA highlights Linux-based devices at LinuxWorld

VIA Technologies will highlight an assortment of interesting Linux-powered devices and applications based on its Mini-ITX form-factor motherboards at LinuxWorld in San Francisco this week. MontaVista releases Carrier Grade Linux for PowerPC

MontaVista Software announced its first carrier-grade Linux support for PowerPC processors. The initial PowerPC processors being supported by MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition (CGE) include IBM's PowerPC 440GX, 440GP, and 750FX processors, which are being used in telecommunications, networking, and network storage applications, MontaVista said. AMIRIX and TimeSys team up to support embedded Linux

Two companies supporting embedded Linux based software development — AMIRIX and TimeSys — have announced an alliance to pool their efforts to support customers using TimeSys Linux. Halifax, Nova Scotia based AMIRIX has been providing embedded Linux based systems and support for over five years, including Linux ports to custom hardware in traditional embedded systems, and even spearheaded the (more…)

Intel joins Eclipse to support open development tool framework

Intel announced that it has joined the Eclipse consortium, an organization of software development tool vendors working together to create an open platform for development tool integration. Intel said it plans to offer Eclipse plug-ins supporting its Pentium 4, Xeon, and Itanium processors, and Intel said it also plans to integrate its development tools, such as Intel Compilers and Intel VTune Performance… (more…)
