AMD showcases Linux-based PDA at LinuxWorld
Aug 5, 2003 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 1 viewsAMD will demonstrate a Linux-based PDA solution at LinuxWorld this week. The technology demonstration consists of the Metrowerks OpenPDA software platform running on the latest version of AMD's Alchemy Solutions Mobile Handheld Reference Design Kit (RDK).
According to AMD, its Mobile Handheld RDK running OpenPDA demonstrates a powerful, multimedia PDA hardware and software solution with a host of standard applications including: multimedia player, games, voice recording, image viewer, synchronization, browsing, and Java technology. In addition, OpenPDA provides a full Personal Information Management (PIM) suite that includes calendar, contacts, to do list, email, and text editor programs, AMD said. The AMD PDA solution is based on AMD's Au1100 system-on-chip processor.
The Metrowerks OpenPDA suite includes an embedded Linux kernel, Trolltech's Qtopia multi-language user interface, esmertec's Jeode Java Virtual Machine (JVM), the Opera software full-featured Web browser, desktop synchronization utilities, mobile networking, and more. The OpenPDA Development Studio, a comprehensive system level development package, is now available from Metrowerks with support for the Au1100 processor.
The AMD Au1100 processor is a MIPS32 technology-based system-on-chip (SOC) processor which is available at speeds of 333MHz, and 400 MHz with power dissipations of less than 200 mW and 250 mW, respectively. Integrated system peripherals include SDRAM, SRAM/Flash, and EPROM memory controllers, an LCD controller, up to 48 general purpose I/Os, a 10/100 Ethernet MAC, USB Device and Host Controller, 3 UARTS, AC-97 Controller, and two secure digital ports.
