Renesas has announced a new mobile phone processor with the power to run a general purpose operating system — such as embedded Linux. Trinity Convergence is shipping its software-only voice over IP (VoIP) suite for embedded Linux on an ARM core. The stack enables developers to build a wide range of cost-sensitive VoIP devices using standard, low-power embedded processors, rather than “costly and power-hungry” application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) and digital signal processors (DSPs), Trinity says. Pengutronix has launched a Web site and mailing list to support Linux on the popular ARM processors from Hynix. The company hopes to encourage peer review, stimulate code sharing, and generally centralize development efforts, especially around the Hynix h7202 and h7201, which Pengutronix says are interesting for low cost industrial projects like PLCs with CAN bus or machine terminals. Linus Torvalds and the Linux kernel development team have adopted a contribution tracking system, under which developers digitally sign patches to acknowledge their right to contribute them. The system will help track contributions and ensure proper developer credit, according to the Open Source Development Labs (OSDL), which oversees Linux development. (more…)

AMD, which in recent months has gained ground against Intel in the battle for the desktop, today announced the addition of a line of high-performance, low-power embedded processors to its Geode embedded x86 processor family. The new processors will be known as the “Geode NX [email protected]” and the “Geode NX [email protected],” reflecting a new naming convention based on relative performance and power consumption.
