SDK supports fast crypto, RNG on Centaur processors

Via has released a software development kit (SDK) to help x86 developers use the random number generator and cryptographic engine built into newer Via/Centaur processors. The PadLock SDK will help both Linux and Windows developers write security processing applications that consume less system resources and run faster, Via says. (more…)

LynuxWorks readies Eclipse-based IDE

LynuxWorks expects to ship a new development tool in two weeks that will support both its embedded Linux distribution and its proprietary RTOS. Luminosity will be based on the Eclipse framework, and will support Solaris and Linux hosts, along with all target architectures supported by BlueCat Linux and LynxOS. (more…)

Newly released LSB 2.0 gains powerful industry ally

Two non-profit organizations devoted to promoting free and open source software standards have made a cooperative agreement. The Free Standards Group (FSG) and the Open Source Development Labs (OSDL) will work together to promote version 2.0 of the Linux Standard Base (LSB), among other initiatives. (more…)

Linux smartphone hits the street in Hong Kong

E28 has launched its latest Linux smartphone in the Hong Kong market. The company earlier shipped the e2800+ to customers in mainland China. The e2800+, e28's second-generation Linux handset, is a dual-band GSM/GPRS device with sophisticated camera/video features. (more…)

“PC Reviver” turns scrap PCs into Linux-based thin clients

The PC Reviver from Asterisk replaces the hard drive in aging computers with a solid-state flash memory device that boots an embedded Linux OS. MontaVista to support multi-core network processor family

Cavium has announced that MontaVista will provide commercial embedded Linux support for the family of multi-core MIPS64 network security processors it announced today. Multicore network security processor targets integrated devices

Cavium will sample a line of single-chip, multi-core “network services processors” (NSPs) in Q1, 2005. The Octeon line will have two to 16 MIPS64 cores, and target highly integrated networking devices capable of examining traffic at the application level (OSI Layers 3 to 7) to perform content and security processing. Wireless broadband for all! says Intel

Intel is sampling a chip for wireless broadband modems that it hopes will greatly increase the number of global households with access to high-speed Internet service. The “Rosedale” SoC supports WiMAX, an emerging broadband wireless standard recently ratified by the IEEE. Rosedale targets inexpensive customer premises equipment (CPEs). (more…)

Codecs for Linux to support high-end Windows audio

Fabless chip house SigmaTel will support Microsoft's latest high-end audio distribution standard in its line of codec chips, it says. The C-Major audio codec family is available with Linux drivers, and will support Microsoft Windows Media Audio 9 Professional (WMA Pro) in chips targeting PC-like devices and home-entertainment systems.
