Samsung used uClinux and an ARM9-based SoC to build a tiny, high-quality diskless camcorder that doubles as a digital camera, mp3 player, voice recorder, data storage device, and web cam. The Miniket runs a 2.6-series “ARM-no-MMU” uClinux kernel that can boot to a shell in 80msec. (more…)

Linux startups among top private European companies

Several embedded Linux-oriented companies were named to a list of top privately held companies in Europe and Israel. The 2004 Tornado100 list, assembled by European tech media company Tornado Insider, includes virtual platform start-up Jaluna, Linux firewall company Astaro, and VoIP (voice-over-IP) software pioneer Skype. Open technology incubator ramps up in Portland area

A center for “open technology” startups will open in a Portland, Ore. suburb on February 1, the OSDL has announced. Funded by the City of Beaverton, the Open Technology Business Center will offer residencies to qualified early-stage companies, with the OSDL providing consulting around open source business models and opportunites. Black Duck joins OSDL

A company specializing in intellectual property management services has joined the Open Source Development Labs (OSDL). Black Duck Software will contribute to OSDL initiatives involving legal issues, it says. Workshop on embedded software standards seeks presenters

The Object Management Group (OMG) has issued a call for presentations for its workshop on software standards for real-time systems, set for July 11-14, 2005, in Washington, DC. Open Graphics Project preps Linux-friendly PC graphics card

KernelTrap has interviewed Timothy Miller, founder of the Open Graphics Project (OGP). Miller and his employer, graphics chipset vendor Tech Source, founded the OGP to produce a 2D- and 3D-accelerated graphics chipset with an open hardware specification, enabling excellent support under Linux and other open source operating systems. Reference design targets mobile VoWLAN phones running Linux

QuickLogic and Renasas are developing a reference design for mobile VoIP (voice-over-IP) and VoWLAN (voice-over-WLAN) phones running embedded Linux. The RTS7720IPP-DS3 design is based on a Renesas SuperH-DSP SoC (system-on-chip), along with a QuickLogic low-power programmable PCI bridge. VA Linux Systems Japan has released a version of its open source Linux kernel debugging tool that supports the x86-64 architecture. Mini Kernel Dump (mkdump) is a Linux-based mini-kernel that runs underneath the Linux kernel, providing a stable environment for capturing and dumping crash dump data. It previously supported IA-32. Rise of Linux buoys cross-platform dev framework

Wind River scoops up ScopeTools

Wind River has acquired the tools division of a long-time partner. The embedded giant will pay Real-Time Innovations (RTI) $10 million for its ScopeTools business unit, including 11 employees and IP (intellectual property) rights to RTI's well-known ScopeTools.
