Oki readies bacon-bit sized uClinux chip

Oki Semiconductor will begin sampling in Q2, 2005, two tiny microcontrollers that it claims are the world's smallest packaged ARM processors. The ML67406x (406x) and ML67405x (405x) measure 5.09 x 4.84mm (in optional “WCSP” package), with the 405x able to run uClinux, according to Oki. (more…)

Linux tools vendor commits to Intel XScale I/O processors

TimeSys says it will continuously support Intel's XScale-based I/O processors through its OnBoard program, a developer community that hosts, verifies, and distributes chip-specific Linux optimizations. TimeSys says the OnBoard program enables it to support the latest chip-specific Linux optimizations with its commercially supported TimeStorm Linux Development Kits (LDKs). (more…)

Rugged transportation boards run Linux

MEN Micro demonstrated two mezzanine card systems at the Embedded Systems Conference this week in San Francisco, as well as a 3U compactPCI card system. The MEN systems feature PowerPC and Intel processors, and target rugged applications such as transportation. (more…)

PVR adapter vendor courts Linux hobbyists with open drivers

Plextor is offering a free SDK (software developer's kit) for Linux hobbyists wishing to build PVRs based on its ConvertX video capture devices. The ConvertX interfaces between televisions and PCs, and should now support PCs running Linux, thanks to the free SDK. (more…)

Freescale joins Linux vendor chip partner program

Freescale (formerly Motorola) Semiconductor has joined a TimeSys program that enables chipmakers to continuously supply their Linux optimizations for inclusion in commercially support Linux toolkits. Joining TimeSys's “OnBoard” program will enable Freescale to get its PowerPC optimizations into TimeSys's TimeStorm Linux Development Kits (LDKs), TimeSys says. (more…)

Separation kernel runs Linux in “ultrasecure” partition

LynuxWorks says it will ship a new super-high-security operating system in July, 2005 that was designed to meet the very highest levels of military certification. The LynxSecure Separation Kernel will run BlueCat Linux and LynxOS-178 applications within ultrasecure user-mode partitions, LynuxWorks says. (more…)

Remote monitoring platform runs Linux

Dexdyne is shipping a starter kit for its Linux-based system for remote access to industrial plants and equipment over the Internet, using wireless communications such as GPRS. PowerPC 4xx-series chips gain European Linux distro

Sysgo says its embedded Linux development toolkit now supports PowerPC 4xx-series chips, a line of SoCs (system-on-chips) that IBM sold to Applied Micro Circuits Corporation (AMCC) in November of 2004. Enea joins Eclipse Foundation, readies IDE

Enea has joined the Eclipse Foundation, and will market an IDE (integrated development environment) based on Eclipse, the company announced today. Enea has joined the Foundation as an Add-in Provider, and is in the process of creating an Eclipse-based product optimized for its OSE RTOS. (more…)

Telecom OS vendor readies asymmetric RTOS/Linux package

Enea plans to ship later this year an asymmetric multiprocessing (AMP) version of its OSE embedded operating system for multi-core chips from Freescale and Broadcom. OSE AMP will feature integrated load balancing, and will support real-time OSE applications alongside Linux applications, Enea says. (more…)

Multi-OS “virtual platform” runs Linux side-by-side with Nucleus

Jaluna has partnered with Accelerated Technology, a division of Mentor Graphics, on a combined Nucleus/Linux offering that the companies claim allows real-time Nucleus applications to run side-by-side with Linux applications on the same system, without additional hardware, and without requiring changes to the applications. PalmSource joins Consumer Electronics Linux Forum
