Two compact ARM-based SBCs debut at ESC

Embedded computer maker Kontron swallows up Dolch

Kontron AG has announced its acquisition of Dolch Computer Systems Inc. for an undisclosed amount of cash from Siegel-Robert Inc. AMD’s Opteron targets embedded apps

AMD has for the first time moved several of its high-end 32/64-bit Opteron microprocessors onto its embedded roadmap, assuring availability of the parts for five years to accommodate the longevity requirements of embedded applications. Toshiba 64-bit embedded processor boasts security engine, PCI

This new Toshiba system-on-chip processor aims a proprietary 400 MHz RISC CPU core and embedded PCI bus at a range of consumer applications such as IP set-top boxes, home gateways, and multimedia appliances. The TX4939XBG-400 is a highly integrated, MIPS-architecture, 64-bit processor built with the company's 90-nanometer process. (more…)

Crypto suite supports Linux-based devices

Cryptography specialist Certicom has launched a security software suite aimed at helping device makers create secure, Web-based user interfaces based on elliptic curve cryptography. MontaVista promises support for PPC-based network processor

MontaVista says it will support a new communications processor from Freescale Semiconductor. The MPC8360E is based on an e300 PowerPC core clocked from 266MHz to 667MHz, and targets wired and wireless access and networking equipment, including MTUs (multi-tenant units), DSLAMs (DSL access multiplexers), wireless basestations, and more. TimeSys aims embedded Linux partner program at chip vendors

TimeSys has launched a partner program intended to help silicon vendors offer up-to-date, commercially-supported embedded Linux distributions for their chips. The TimeSys OnBoard program provides an infrastructure that allows the chipmakers to collaborate with TimeSys on testing, certifying, and distributing embedded Linux kernels containing their latest chip-specific support. iPod Linux project “ripped” the bootloader code, ZDNet claims

Browser to become tomorrow’s mobile phone UI?

Opera Software, France Telecom, and Orange are exploring ways to add a browser-like home screen to mobile phones, to improve usability and to make lucrative data services more accessible. “Platform,” which is derived from Opera's mobile browser technology, replaces the handset's normally idle homescreen.
