Compact, rugged, high-integration SBC supports Linux

Fastwel will soon ship a low-power, high-integration single-board computer (SBC) in a compact, 3.5-inch form-factor. The CPB902 is based on an STMicroelectronics VEGA processor and features onboard CRT/LCD video, dual 100Mbit Ethernet ports, six serial ports, and support for Linux, according to the Russian company. Eurotech S.p.A. says it expects to begin trading on the Italian stock exchange by the end of 2005. eCos finds a home in home security

A Bulgarian company is shipping a wireless remote control and monitoring device based on eCos, an open source embedded operating system. The Home Securer provides wireless remote access via a built-in tri-band GSM radio. Despite its name, it is targeted at industrial, business, and home users. (more…)

A German vendor claiming to have the best-selling embedded Linux distribution in Europe has begun offering a free version of its product as a download from its website. Set-top-box vendor hops on virtual platform technology

Amino is building an inexpensive Linux IP-STB (set-top-box) based on a single-core Texas Instruments DSP (digital signal processor) and virtual platform technology from Jaluna. Jaluna says its OSWare technology helped Amino minimize BOM (bill of materials) costs while re-using existing Linux software. (more…)

Linux turns PC into low-cost DVB-T emitter

Fabrice Bellard has proven the concept of a low-cost DVB-T emitter based on a standard PC running Linux. Bellard's demonstration exploits harmonics generated by VGA video cards to pipe a usable VHF-range signal directly into DVB-T set-top boxes. Bellard says he plans to release the source code, given enough interest. (more…)

The VPMX31 Virtual Platform aims to enable parallel software and hardware development efforts for devices based on i.MX31/i.MX31L chips, including mobile phones and handheld wireless entertainment devices. VersaLogic is shipping a low-power PC/104-Plus single-board computer (SBC) based on an AMD Elan SC520 system-on-chip (SoC) processor. Free Open Firmware implementation for PowerPC

IBM is offering a free open source implementation of the IEEE-1275 Open Firmware standard. Slimline Open Firmware (SLOF) can be used by software engineers developing boot firmware, operating systems, or applications for PowerPC, or by hardware engineers interested in fast bring-up of PowerPC-based systems, according to IBM's DeveloperWorks website.
