The Infrared Data Association (IrDA) has adopted a protocol that could support transfer rates of 100Mbit/s, or 25 times greater throughput than current infrared communications protocols. “IRSimple” offers improved data throughput on current IrDA hardware (with a software upgrade), and so far, has been demonstrated at 16Mbit/s on prototypical hardware, the IrDA says.

The IrDA says it expects IrSimple to allow digital cameras and mobile phones to act as remote-control-like devices capable of beaming high-resolution photos to flat-panel TVs and other other display devices essentially instantaneously.
