OpenSolaris liveCD boots into Xorg/XFce

Sun Microsystems's India Engineering Center has created a liveCD based on OpenSolaris and a variety of free software, including Xorg, the XFce lightweight desktop environment, bash, Firefox, Gaim, and “SuperTux,” a Super Mario Brothers clone. The Center hopes its “Belenix” CD will help popularize OpenSolaris in India's open source community. (more…)

Quad-core Opteron SBC runs Debian AMD64 Linux

Win Enterprises is sampling an SHB Express (system host board) single-board computer (SBC) that supports a range of single- and dual-core Opteron processors, and runs Debian AMD64 Linux. Linux gains lightweight embedded database

A database consultancy in Seattle is beta-testing a lightweight, cross-platform database for mobile and embedded applications. ITTIA's Fuel database supports Linux, has a footprint of about 200KB, and was written from scratch with substantial design input from hundreds of database customers, the company says. (more…)

Real-Time Logic's (RTL's) BarracudaDrive V1.5.2 provides remote file management on Linux, Windows, or Mac PCs from any Internet computer, the company says, and demonstrates the company's Barracuda webserver and SharkSSL library. A government contractor is pilot-testing Linux server technology that, when combined with thin clients, can provide government workers with secure access to multiple networks, servers, and security levels, it says. D-Link India used Linux to build a multi-service access router aimed at providing remote offices with network fault-tolerant access to corporate headquarters.
