Single-chip WiFi radio supports Linux

Conexant Systems is shipping a 68 square millimeter single-chip 802.11b/g radio designed for battery-powered handheld device applications. The CX53121 targets mobile phones, VoIP handsets, cameras, MP3 players, gaming consoles, and GPS gadgets, and supports Linux, according to the company. (more…)

Nokia releases beta of new 770 tools, Linux

Nokia's open source Maemo project has released a beta version of its next-generation SDK (software developer kit). The Mistral SDK beta aims to help developers port applications to Maemo 2.0 prior to the debut of Tablet OS 2006 for the Nokia 770 later this quarter. (more…)

ARM9 microcontroller costs $6, runs Linux

Atmel will ship in June the world's first ARM9-based microcontroller (MCU) to support small-footprint RTOSes (real-time OSes), it claims. The AT91SAM9260 is the first of Atmel's SAM9 MCU line, aimed at providing an upgrade path to SAM7 MCU customers in real-time control markets. The SAM9 MCUs support embedded Linux and Windows CE. OLPC debuts at Boston meeting

At an event honoring top technology innovations from Massachusetts companies in Boston June 7, Nicholas Negroponte, co-founder of the MIT Media Lab and chairman of the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project, was inducted into the MITX (Massachusetts Innovation & Technology Exchange) Innovation Hall of Fame. Home NAS server reference design runs Linux

Taiwanese IC (integrated circuit) design house DataStor used embedded Linux to create a home network-attached storage appliance reference design. The NAS Gear design is based on a 200MHz ARM9 processor, supports drives larger than 500GB, and features an integrated blue LCM (liquid-crystal module). (more…)

Intervideo is demonstrating mobile digital TV (DTV) technology that supports Linux devices this week, at Computex in Taipei. The company says its iMobi DTV technology enables device manufacturers to add mobile TV capabilities tomobile phones, PDAs, automobile entertainment systems, portable media players, and other devices. VIA adds ARM9 to device CPU arsenal

VIA has expanded its licensing agreement with ARM to include two ARM9-based processors, the companies have announced. The ARM926EJ-S and ARM968E-S processors will help VIA and its subsidiaries improve products aimed at mobile phones, while driving expansion into set-top boxes, telematics, and personal media players, VIA says. Linux demoed alongside RTOSes on Intel Core Duo

Jaluna has joined Intel's communications partner program, and demonstrated unmodified versions of Linux and various RTOSes (real-time OSes) running simultaneously on Intel's Core Duo architecture. The demonstration leverages Jaluna's OSware real-time virtualization technology, along with Intel Virtualization Technology hardware built into Core Single and Core Duo chips. (more…)
