A smaller, lighter, faster, less expensive, x86-compatible version of the Linux-based Pepper Pad web tablet will ship in August. The third-generation Pepper Pad 3 has moved to an AMD Geode processor, and is said to offer better performance, battery life, and other improvements. (more…)

Embedded Linux developer service gains major tools upgrade

TimeSys is shipping a major update to the Eclipse-based tools available with its subscription-based online service for embedded Linux developers. The LinuxLink Developer Suite, based on Eclipse 3.1 and CDT 3.0.1 (C Development Tool), is available as an add-on to existing LinuxLink customers, or as part of LinuxLink “Developer Edition.” (more…)

Tiny board simplifies software-defined radio projects

A small consulting company is shipping an inexpensive add-on board targeting software-defined radio (SDR) projects. Ettus Research's $550 Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP) supports Linux and GNU Radio software, and is available with RF modules and antennas covering virtually the entire radio spectrum. FSMLabs claims first CGL 3.x registration

The OSDL's next-generation Carrier Grade Linux (CGL) specification has attracted its first registrant. Just three months after the release of the CGL 3.2 spec — the first “registerable” release in the CGL 3.x series — FSMLabs yesterday completed CGL 3.2 registration for its RTCore x86-64 Enhanced Carrier Grade Linux (E-CGL). Digital video dev kits include embedded Linux

Texas Instruments will license and support MontaVista Linux directly, as part of a digital video development kit supporting its DaVinci RISC/DSP processors. TI's DaVinci Technology Development Kit (TDK) for digital video applications will also include software integration and system visualization technology, and is expected to ship in Q3. (more…)

Linux top embedded OS but declining, survey suggests

Linux remains the most popular embedded OS, according to data from a recent CMP survey of electronics trade journal readers and Embedded Systems Conference attendees. However, a comparison of 2005 and 2006 survey data shows “open-source enthusiasm waning,” Embedded Systems Design (ESD) editor-in-chief Jim Turley suggests. (more…)

ATCA platform runs CGL, open source management suite

Linux-powered music phone ships in Japan

Panasonic is shipping another Linux-based mobile phone to NTT DoCoMo, for use with DoCoMo's FOMA (“Freedom of Mobile Multimedia Access”) 3G network. The P902iS is compatible with DoCoMo's Chaku-Uta music download service, and supports 2GB miniSD cards for storage of up to 1000 songs. (more…)

MontaVista announces new CEO

HP unveils Carrier Grade Debian

In a move calculated to expand Carrier Grade Linux's (CGL's) developer and user communities, HP has registered Debian's “Sarge” distribution with version 2.02 of the OSDL's CGL specification, and started a Carrier Grade subproject within Debian. Debian-CGL offers an intermediary choice between commercial CGL distributions and “rolling your own,” according to the OSDL. (more…)

Nokia turns cellphones into webservers

Nokia has ported the Apache webserver to Symbian, in order to enable mobile phones to serve content on the World Wide Web. Many mobile phones today have more processing power than early Internet servers, suggesting that “there really is no reason anymore why webservers could not reside on mobile phones,” according to the company.
