Report examines Linux’s potential in mobile phones

All tier one mobile phone manufacturers are “involved with Linux on some level,” with openness, flexibility, and developer affinity rather than cost driving interest, IMS Research reports. A search engine designed specifically to index software program source code has been integrated with SourceForge.net. Krugle's Web-based tool aims to enable developers to search the source code of some 145,000 open source projects hosted at SourceForge. (more…)

Debian 4.0 is out the door

The Debian project has released a new version of its Linux- and GNU-based operating system distribution. Debian 4.0, aka “Etch,” is available for 11 architectures, including Alpha, AMD64, ARM, HP-PA/RISC, x86, IA-64, MIPS, MIPS (DEC), PowerPC, S/390, and SPARC. (more…)

Mot ships 800,000th Linux-based IP-STB

Motorola has shipped its millionth Internet Protocol set-top box (IP-STB), it announced last Friday. Linux has been the embedded software platform in “about 80 percent” of these devices, a company spokesperson said. (more…)

PMP does WiFi, downloads music, runs Linux

Flash memory and consumer device specialist SanDisk is shipping the first portable multimedia player (PMP) able to download music directly via WiFi, without the use of a PC. The “Sansa Connect,” which runs embedded Linux and Mono, connects directly to online music services via WiFi, according to sources. (more…)

Virtualization vendor promises AMD-V support

Real-time Linux and microkernel software specialist Sysgo on April 5 revealed plans to support hardware virtualization features built into AMD's multi-core embedded processors. Sysgo's PikeOS microkernel for AMD processors equipped with “AMD-V” hardware will run Linux and/or Windows alongside real-time POSIX applications, the company said. (more…)

Fanless PC/104-Plus SBC runs at extreme temperatures

A new WinSystems PC/104-Plus format single-board computer (SBC) operates over a -40 to +85 degree C temperature range without active cooling. Teensy Linux SBC sprouts second Ethernet port

SSV has added a new model to its line of miniature ARM-based single-board computers (SBCs) designed to fit into IC-style sockets.
