Linux CGL distro ported to multicore MIPS64 chips

Apr 29, 2008 — by Eric Brown — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 6 views

Wind River has ported its newest Carrier Grade Linux distribution to multicore MIPS64-based processors from Raza Microelectronics, Inc. (RMI). Platform for Network Equipment, Linux Edition (PNE-LE) 2.0 for RMI's XLR chip line brings features like dual IPv4/IPv6 support and modern crytography to enterprise and telecom customers alike, Wind River said.

RMI describes its XLR chips as general-purpose processors for communications, networking, wireless, and security applications. XLR family chips integrate four or eight MIPS64 cores clocked up to 1.5GHz. Each core is said to implement fine-grained, four-way multi-threading, for the equivalent performance of 16 or 32 separate cores.

Last August, Wind River announced an XLR port of PNE-LE 1.3. Today, Wind River announced an XLR port of its newer PNE-LE version 2.0 release.

Touted features in the XLR port of PNE-LE 2.0 include:

  • Core networking:
    • Dual IPv4/IPv6 support
    • IPv6 phase2 logo certification
  • Security:
    • IPsec, IKE v1, IKE v2, SSL, SSH, 802.1x, EAP framework, NAT, Firewall
  • Wireless networking and wireless security:
    • 802.11 a/b/g; 802.1x, 802.11i, WPA/WPA2
  • Mobile IP:
    • MIP home agent, foreign agent, and mobile node
  • Network management:
    • SNMPv1/v2/v3, AgentX, CLI, Web
  • Routing:
    • Policy-based Routing
    • Virtual Routing Redundancy Protocol (VRRP)
    • Equal Cost Multi-Path routing (ECMP)

Wind River said the latest version of its Workbench tool suite also supports the RMI parts, including “OCD” versions supporting on-chip debugging (OCD) interfaces built into the XLR chips. Also available is an XLR port of VxWorks 6.6, the first release of Wind River's proprietary VxWorks RTOS to support SMP (symmetric multiprocessing). VxWorks 6.6 shipped last October, with initial support for multicore MIPS64 processors from RMI competitor Cavium.

A year ago, Wind River announced that its Workbench debugging tools had been upgraded to support multi-core processors. Wind River also recently announced PNE-LE support for another multi-core, multi-threading processor, Sun's UltraSPARC T2.

Stated Glenn Seiler, Wind River's director of networking solutions, “By pre-integrating RMI's multi-threaded processing engines with Wind River technology, customers can leverage an out-of-the-box solution.”

Availability

Board support packages for RMI's XLR processors are available today, says Wind River, for Wind River Platform for Networking Equipment, Linux Edition version 2.0, as well as VxWorks 6.6 for SMP. A Wind River spokesperson said the company plans to offer support for RMI's scaled-down XLS version of XLR at some point in the future.
