MontaVista expands in France and Spain

MontaVista Software has signed up a value-added distributor to expand its sales and support organization in the EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Asia) region. Its deal with embedded supplier ANTYCIP will especialy strengthen MontaVista's presence in France and Spain, says the Silicon Valley-based vendor of Linux distributions and development tools. Linux maintainers woo device developers

Linux's first-ever official “embedded maintainers” have invited device developers to get involved in the kernel development process. Mozilla previews Firefox Mobile

Mozilla Labs has posted a video preview, source code, and an online demo of its forthcoming mobile web browser. Code-named “Fennec” for now, Firefox Mobile features an innovative full-screen, finger-friendly interface with iPhone-like “kinetic” scrolling, and a Mac-like “expose” feature for tabs. (more…)

New spec promises HD-TV over existing home wires

An emerging gigabit-speed, triple-wire technology called G.hn could ship in 42 million units by 2013, says ABI Research. Under development by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), and promoted by a group called the HomeGrid Alliance, G.hn is billed as an HD IPTV-capable successor to current powerline networking standards. Quad-core PowerPC workstation runs Linux

Terra Soft Solutions announced a development workstation billed as the heir to the Apple PowerMac G5 Quad, except more open. The Yellow Dog Linux (YDL) PowerStation offers four PowerPC cores clocked at 2.5GHz, up to 32GB RAM, and four bays for serially attached SCSI (SAS) drives. (more…)

World’s fastest supercomputer runs Linux

IBM announced the completion of a one-petaflop supercomputer that runs Red Hat Linux. Twice as fast as the previous record-setter, the IBM Blue Gene, the Roadrunner uses a hybrid design that combines 6,948 dual-core AMD Opteron chips with 12,960 Cell processor engines. (more…)

X86 WiFi mesh routers run Debian Linux

Saxnet is shipping three versions of its Debian Linux-powered wireless mesh-networking router. The standard Meshnode III offers a self-organizing transmission system with up to four 100 mW 802.11a/b/g radios, while a “Power” version ups the Wattage to 600 mW and a “Custom” version adds hardware customizability. Linux IPC stack adds protocol negotiation

Enea has upgraded its Linux-compatible interprocess communications (IPC) services software for distributed telecom systems. Linx now incorporates features that improve service availability, says Enea, including protocol/feature negotiation, priority messaging, and support for the new in-service upgrade capability in Enea's carrier-grade Element middleware. Chinese SoCs run Linux

Beijing-based Ingenic Seminconductor is shipping three MIPS-based SoCs (system on chips) that support Linux. The Jz4720, Jz4730, and Jz4740 target devices ranging from basic PMPs (personal media players) to smartphones, with “high performance and low power consumption,” the company says. (more…)
