Linux “plumbers” convene

ARM9 board boots Debian in 0.69 seconds

Technologic Systems has upgraded the firmware for its quick-booting single-board computer (SBC) to make it boot even quicker. Equipped with a Marvell 500Mhz ARM9 CPU running Debian Sarge, the TS-7800 can boot Linux 2.6.21 from NAND flash in 0.69 seconds, claims Technologic. (more…)

Linux distro targets mobile SoC

MontaVista announced that its Mobilinux 5.0 Linux distribution for mobile devices has been optimized for the Freescale i.MX31 system-on-chip (SoC). The optimization brings the total number of Freescale processors supported by MontaVista distributions to ten, says the company. (more…)

Mobile WiMAX chipset boasts low idle current, tiny footprint

Fujitsu Microelectronics America, Inc. (FMA) announced a mobile WiMAX chipset optimized for WiMAX peripherals for PCs, smartphones, and PDAs. According to Fujitsu, the 12x12mm Mobile WiMAX chipset offers a sub-0.5mA idle current, and supports Linux and Windows Mobile operating systems. (more…)

Chip vendor joins Eclipse, ports dev tools

Freescale Semiconductor announced it is porting its Linux-compatible CodeWarrior development tools to the Eclipse open architecture platform. Freescale is also joining the Eclipse Foundation and will work with Power.org and Wind River on the Eclipse Target Communication Framework project, says the company. (more…)

Nokia completes Trolltech acquisition

Finland-based handset manufacturer Nokia announced that it has completed its acquisition of Trolltech. The Norwegian software firm's development talent — together with its Linux-compatible “Qt” application development framework — is likely to help Nokia improve its cross-platform support, and expand its presence in the Linux mobile device market. Open source push email vendor scores funding

Funambol announced a new $12.5-million funding round to promote its open-source, push email and personal information management (PIM) synchronization software for mobile devices. Meanwhile, the company is pushing forward with versions of its Linux-compatible software for the iPhone, Blackberry, AOL's IM, and soon, Android. (more…)

ARM11 SoC gains dev kit

Freescale Semiconductor is shipping a product development kit (PDK) for its ARM11-based i.MX31 system-on-chip (SoC). The kit includes a CPU module, a “Personality” (peripherals) module, a debugging device, and board support packages (BSPs) for either Linux or Windows CE. (more…)

Multi-core networking SoCs tout low power consumption

Freescale Semiconductor has announced a pin- and software-compatible successor to its Linux-compatible PowerQUICC line of network processors. Based on one to eight e500 cores clocked from 400MHz to 1.5GHz, the power-efficient “QorIQ” processors will be fabricated with 45nm process technology, and offer built-in support for virtualization. Linux-based telecom platform boasts in-service upgrades

Enea announced version 2.0 of its Linux-based Enea Accelerator Platform for IP-based services built on carrier-grade infrastructure. Wind River readies virtualization stack

Wind River will enter the virtualization software market, focusing on networking, consumer electronics, and industrial automation, it said. The company will in August begin beta-testing a hypervisor and tools aimed at letting customers flexibly deploy Linux, VxWorks, and other RTOSes symmetrically or asymmetrically on one or multiple physical processor cores. The report, aimed at quantifying MID-related opportunities for chip makers, identifies TI and Qualcomm as well-positioned in an emergent market expected to reach 40 million unit shipments globally within four years. uClinux console servers add open source UPS mgmt
