MontaVista does the Vision thing
Jun 9, 2008 — by Eric Brown — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewsMontaVista Software has opened registration and issued a call-for-papers for its Vision 2008 Embedded Linux Developers Conference. Scheduled for Oct. 1-3 in San Francisco, the second-year annual event will feature over 35 presentations and breakout sessions on topics of interest to… embedded Linux developers, says MontaVista.

Sponsored by Platinum sponsor Freescale Semiconductor, Vision 2008 is devoted to sharing real-world tips, techniques, and tools for users of MontaVista's Linux distributions and development tools. The conference will offer “20 percent more sessions on in-demand topics” than last year's event, promises MontaVista.
Vision 2007 attracted some 400 attendees and featured an interesting keynote from kernel maintainer Andrew Morton (pictured above chatting with Crucial Security engineer Wyatt Banks). The conference was also energized by the announcement of MontaVista Mobilinux 5.0 only the week before.
Touted events at Vision 2008 include:
- Hands-on lab on developing applications for multi-core processors
- A full-day “Hands-on Device Driver Bootcamp” at the start of the conference
- Birds-of-a-feather sessions on real-time Linux, power management, GPL licensing, and the Linux kernel
- Sessions on the open source community, advanced Linux development, developing real-time applications, debugging, networking, and system optimization
Vision 2008 speakers: Jon Corbet, Chris Hallinan, Paul McKenney, Jim Ready, and Jason Wacha
The Vision 2008 conference will feature speakers including:
- Jonathan Corbet, editor of LWN.net
- Christopher Hallinan, author of Prentice Hall's book, Embedded Linux Primer
- Paul McKenney, IBM Distinguished Engineer and real-time Linux expert
- Jim Ready, MontaVista CTO and founder, embedded industry pioneer, and the author of a whitepaper on the Linux mobile market.
- Jason Wacha, director and founder, Open Bar; VP of Corporate Affairs and general counsel, MontaVista; and noted GPL expert
Call for Papers
MontaVista is now accepting submission for papers for the 45-minute educational sessions. The abstract deadline is June 27th, and presenters will receive a free admission to the conference. Presentations should discuss techniques and methods for using embedded Linux to improve software or devices, says MontaVista.
Potential presentation topics include:
- Hardware bring-up
- Application bring-up
- Real-time performance
- Embedded Linux on multi-core processors
- Linux in mobile devices
- Linux in automotive devices
- Carrier Grade Linux
- Reducing power consumption
- Debugging
- Driver development
- Tuning embedded Linux performance
- Minimizing application footprint
- Virtualization
Stated Rusty Harris, who was promoted to resident and CEO in February, “Vision 2008 will be the educational event where embedded Linux gets real, presenting real-world techniques for designing real applications and real devices.”
