3.5-inch SBC accepts expansion modules

Avalue announced an Intel Atom-powered 3.5-inch SBC (single board computer) with six optional expansion modules. The ECM945GSE Plus has 1GB of onboard DDR2 RAM, six USB 2.0 ports, two SATA ports, and two Mini PCI Express slots, the company says.

Linux-ready, open-platform ARM9/DSP SBC costs $89

Four distributors have begun shipping the open platform, Linux-ready Hawkboard single board computer (SBC) for as low as $89. Based on the Texas Instruments OMAP-L138 system-on-chip (SoC), which combines an ARM9 core and a DSP, the community-driven Hawkboard project is structured on the TI-sponsored BeagleBoard project, and is similarly designed for hobbyists and general testing.

Smartphones on a roll, IDC says

IDC says the smartphone market “is in high-growth mode again,” with a growth rate more than double that of the overall phone market. Outpacing even the fourth quarter of 2009, 1Q 2010 shipments reached 54.7 million units, up 56.7 percent year-over-year, the market research firm says.

Motorola acquiring Azingo, kissing off Android?

Motorola is acquiring LiMo-linked middleware and Web 2.0 app software company Azingo, according to several reports. Several hundred India-based software engineers would be focused on lessening Motorola's dependence on Google, suggests The Register, while GigaOM speculates that Motorola is building its own OS and SFGate sees a China connection.

Panel PC offers extended temperature protection

WinSystems is shipping an open-frame panel PC that operates at temperatures ranging from -4 to 158 deg. F. Based on a PC/104-Plus single board computer (SBC), the PPC3-G-6.5 is equipped with a 500MHz AMD LX800, a 6.5-inch, 640 x 480 resistive touchscreen, an Ethernet port, two USB 2.0 ports, and four serial ports, among other interfaces.

Amidst 4G growth, Clearwire ponders move from WiMAX to LTE

Clearwire Communications announced new markets and handsets for its WiMAX-based 4G mobile internet service, including a video-centric Android phone from Samsung. But, even as it announced a 94 percent increase in subscribers and 72 percent year-over-year increase in revenue, the service provider signaled a possible migration from WiMAX to the rival LTE (Long Term Evolution) technology.

Google Android tablet runs Flash on Tegra 2 SoC

Adobe has demonstrated a prototype Nvidia Tegra 2-based Android tablet from Google running Adobe's Flash, say industry reports. Meanwhile, Samsung is preparing an “S-Pad” Android tablet, and Bill Gates tips new Microsoft tablet projects, say other reports.

Advantech announced a ruggedized, fanless automation computer with a front-accessible I/O design. The UNO-3084 is equipped with a 1.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, up to 4GB of DDR2 RAM, dual DVI-I ports with support for up to three displays, dual Firewire interfaces, plus Ethernet, USB, and serial connectivity, says the company.

LinuxCon keynotes feature Linux insiders — and outsiders

The show will feature keynote speakers including Virgin America's Ravi Simhambhatla, GNOME's Stormy Peters, the SFLC's Eben Moglen, and Forrester's Jeffrey S. Hammond, and hosts a Linux Kernel Roundtable with Ted T'so and other kernel insiders.

Kontron announced an entry-level MicroTCA system that can hold up to six mid-size AMC cards and one full-size MCH (MicroTCA Carrier Hub). The Kontron MicroTCA platform OM6060 supports multiple PCI Express, gigabit Ethernet, and SRIO configurations, says the company.

Intel’s Moorestown Atom launches — without Windows

[Updated, 8:00AM] — Intel has finally launched its “Moorestown” platform, slashing x86 power consumption but — initially, at least — spurning Microsoft Windows. Supporting Moblin MeeGo, and Android flavors of Linux, the Atom Z6xx SoC (system on chip) will give devices more than 10 days standby, two days of audio playback, and up to five hours of video playback, the company says.

The Linux Mint team has released a development RC (release candidate) version of Linux Mint 9 (“Isadora”), based on Ubuntu 10.04. Linux Mint 9 features a new software manager with 30,000 packages, a new backup tool, and menu and interface improvements, says the team.

AOpen announced a desktop PC touted as being the smallest device to accept Intel Core i5 and Core i7 processors. The “MP57” includes up to 4GB of DDR3 memory, bays for a 2.5-inch hard disk and optical drive, two PCI Mini Card expansion slots, plus DVI-I, HDMI, and eSATA ports, the company says.

Via is shipping a Mini-ITX board with 1GHz or 1.3GHz versions of its embedded-oriented Nano E-Series processor. The Via Epia-M830 offers a VX800 northbridge/southbridge, up to 2GB of DDR2 memory, plus real-world ports including gigabit Ethernet, USB, and serial, the company says.

T-Mobile announced a new version of its HTC-manufactured MyTouch 3G smartphone featuring a QWERTY keyboard, Android 2.1, and an updated T-Mobile UI layer with a voice-command “Genius Button.” The mid-range MyTouch 3G Slide offers a 3.4-inch touchscreen, WiFi, Bluetooth, a five-megapixel camera, and 8GB of preinstalled memory, says the company.
