Panel PC offers extended temperature protection

May 6, 2010 — by Eric Brown — from the LinuxDevices Archive — views

WinSystems is shipping an open-frame panel PC that operates at temperatures ranging from -4 to 158 deg. F. Based on a PC/104-Plus single board computer (SBC), the PPC3-G-6.5 is equipped with a 500MHz AMD LX800, a 6.5-inch, 640 x 480 resistive touchscreen, an Ethernet port, two USB 2.0 ports, and four serial ports, among other interfaces.

The PPC3-G-6.5 is designed for medical display, kiosks, transportation, instrumentation, and industrial automation and control applications, says WinSystems. The device is built around the company's previously released PPM-LX800-G (left), a PC/104-Plus compliant SBC that features a 500MHz AMD LX800 CPU and includes 1GB of SDRAM.

In addition to supporting PC/104 or PC/104-Plus expansion for options such as WiFi, the system is said to offer a CompactFlash slot, as well as an EIDE interface that supports two drives, says WinSystems. The PPC3-G-6.5 (below) is equipped with a 10/100 Ethernet port, two USB 2.0 ports, and four serial ports, WinSystems says.

The display subsystem incorporates an "outdoor-use," 6.5-inch resistive touchscreen with 640 x 480 resolution, says WinSystems. The display is said to offer anti-reflective coating, high, 500-nit luminance, a wide viewing angle, and a 600:1 contrast ratio. The subsystem features two long-life, user-replaceable CCFL lamps, says the company.

The PPC3's 7.7 x 5.4 x 2.0-inch, open-frame chassis is constructed of heavy duty aluminum alloy, and permits flexible mounting options, says WinSystems. The frame is said to be designed to prevent any twisting or excessive stress on the display's surface.

The internal power typically requires +5 volts and +12 volts, and an 80-Watt external supply option is also said to be available. The PPC3 supports temperatures from between -4 to 158 deg. F (-20 to 70 deg. C), and the system does not require a fan, says the company.

Specifications listed for the PPC3-G-6.5-359-0 include:

  • Processor — AMD LX800 @ 500MHz
  • Memory — 1GB SDRAM
  • Flash expansion — 1 x Type I/II CompactFlash slot

WinSystems offers hardware/software development kits (SDKs) for Linux 2.6.and Windows XPe, including software, hardware, enclosure, and cables. Because the SBC is x86-compatible, it also supports other operating systems such as Windows CE, DOS, QNX and real-time executives, says the company. The PPC3 is also said to support remote booting for use as a diskless network computer.
