Linux IP phone offers seven-inch touchscreen and TV projection

Grandstream Networks is readying a Linux-based IP phone with a seven-inch touchscreen. The GXV3175 offers a 1.3-megapixel camera, 802.11n, dual Ethernet and USB 2.0 ports, and the ability to project videoconferencing sessions on an attached TV.

NEC to show dual-screen Android tablet and notebook at CES

NEC announced a few details about Android-based products it plans to show at CES 2011 on Jan. 5-9, including a notebook as well as single and dual-screen “Cloud Communicator Tablet.” Meanwhile, Staples has already pulled ViewSonic's new 10.1-inch, Android-based G-Tablet due to problems the manufacturer blames on Android, says a report.

Fanless LAN appliance has six gigabit ports

Axiomtek announced a fanless, desktop network appliance that uses Intel's Atom D510 processor and provides six gigabit Ethernet ports. The NA-320FL includes both hard disk and CompactFlash storage, accepts up to 2GB of RAM, and has a PCI Express Mini Card expansion slot, the company says.

Linux shows name dates, ask for papers

O'Reilly has opened up a call for participation for its Open Source Convention (OSCON) 2011, to be held on July 25-29 at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, Oregon. Meanwhile, the Linux Foundation's Consumer Electronics Linux Forum (CELF) announced that its Embedded Linux Conference (ELC) will be held April 11-13 in San Francisco.

Intel’s 11 tech predictions for ’11

Intel released a list of 11 tech predictions for next year, including “tablet mania,” more smart TV offerings, the spread of “context-aware” devices, and “Minority Report”-like digital signs. Meanwhile, the chip giant's 2011 “Sandy Bridge” Core processors are reportedly already on sale in Malaysia.

Mot teases with tablet video as Honeycomb rumors buzz

Amid rumors that “Honeycomb” will be released in February as Android 2.4, not Android 3.0, Motorola released a teaser video about a Honeycomb tablet due for an unveiling at next month's CES show. Meanwhile, Piper Jaffray projects that Android tablets will comprise 39 percent of the tablet market by 2012, closing in on the iPad's 44 percent share.

Free schematics offered for Atom-based four-wheel drive robot

Robot controller manufacturer Roboteq is offering free mechanical CAD drawings, wiring diagrams, software, and detailed assembly instructions for a four-wheel drive robot. The 2.0 x 1.5-foot WiFi Robot design platform combines Intel's D510MO Mini-ITX mainboard with Roboteq's AX3500 DC Motor Controller, Wi-Fi, a video camera, and other components, says the company.

Stallman blasts Google over Chrome OS privacy

Free Software Foundation (FSF) founder Richard Stallman criticized Google's cloud-oriented Chrome OS for placing too much legal control over data in Google's hands. Google fired back with a spirited defense, but industry analysts say that Stallman raises valid questions about privacy and legal rights in a cloud regime.

Google Maps goes 3D as Amazon, Chumby, and LinkedIn release Android apps

Google released Google Maps 5.0 for Android, featuring dynamic 3D vector graphics and offline capabilities. Other Android app debuts this week include LinkedIn for Android, a Kindle for Android 2.0 release that adds periodical support, plus a Chumby app that brings the company's push-content service to Android.

Set-top SoC supports 3D TV, future HD standards

Broadcom says it is now sampling a new SoC (system-on-chip) for STBs (set-top boxes) that includes a multithreaded, 1.3GHz MIPS applications processor. The BCM7422 supports full-resolution HD 3D TV, is compatible with 1080p60/50 content distribution, and offers an OpenGL ES 2.0 3D GPU (graphics processing unit), the company says.

8.4-inch Android 2.1 tablet on sale for $230

E Fun released a new version of its line of “Nextbook” Android tablets with an unusual 8.4-inch screen size. The $230 Next3 runs Android 2.1 on a dual-core, 600MHz ARM9 processor, and offers an 8.4-inch, 800 x 600 resistive touchscreen, Wi-Fi, SD expansion, and Borders eBook store access, says the company.

Intel’s embedded group gets new boss

Intel has named Ton Steenman, a 28-year company veteran, as the head of its Embedded and Communications Group. It also officially confirmed the creation — first revealed by The New York Times earlier this month — of its Netbook and Tablet Group.

Dual-core 1.5GHz SoC touted for power management, concurrency

Applied Micro Circuits (AppliedMicro) announced the first member of a new “PacketPro” family of single and dual-core embedded PowerPC system-on-a-chips (SoCs). Aimed at network and industrial equipment, the Mamba APM86190 and APM86290 feature up to two 1.5GHz PowerPC 465 cores, a DDR3 memory controller, plus advanced power management, security, and concurrency functionality, says the company.

PICMG board provides RAID, optional flash drive

Kontron announced a PICMG 1.3 single board computer (SBC) that supports Intel's Core i7/i5/i3 and Pentium processors while accepting up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM. The PCI-761 provides PCI and PCI Express expansion, six RAID-enabled SATA connectors, dual gigabit Ethernet connectors, 12 USB 2.0 ports, and an optional 8GB flash module, the company says.

This panel PC’s basically a wall-mountable tablet

Avalue announced an 8.9-inch panel PC that employs CompactFlash storage. The FPC-08W05 includes a resistive touchscreen with 1024 x 600 resolution, up to 2GB of RAM, four USB ports, gigabit Ethernet, and a VGA port, the company says.
