Avalue announced an 8.9-inch panel PC that employs CompactFlash storage. The FPC-08W05 includes a resistive touchscreen with 1024 x 600 resolution, up to 2GB of RAM, four USB ports, gigabit Ethernet, and a VGA port, the company says.

Avalue says its new FPC-08W05 is intended for kiosk, food service, or HMI (human machine interface) applications, and is capable of operating in temperature ranges from 14 to 140 deg. F. The device is said to use a dual-core Atom, but this isn't specified further; given the ICH8M I/O controller that is listed, however, we assume the company's talking about the 1.66GHz D510.

According to Avalue, the FPC-08W05 accepts up to 2GB of DDR2 RAM in a single SODIMM socket, and employs an internal Type I/II CompactFlash slot for mass storage. Further cited are a gigabit Ethernet port, four USB 2.0 ports, audio I/O, a VGA output, and two serial ports — one is an RS232 port, while the second can be either RS232 or RS422/485.

Avalue says the FPC-08W05 has an 8.9-inch resistive touchscreen with 1024 x 600 pixels, a 200-nit brightness rating, and a 500:1 contrast ratio. Essentially, then, what we have here is a device with resolution and processing power of a netbook or tablet PC, but no battery: It can be mounted on a wall using VESA-standard accessories or placed within a cutout for a more permanent installation, according to the company.

No information was provided about operating compatibility, but the device should run any x86 operating system, including Linux.
