Xi3 Corp. announced plans to ship the first desktop PC based on Google's Chrome OS, based closely on the new, Linux-ready 4.0 x 3.66 x 3.66-inch Xi3 Modular Computer. The ChromiumPC offers a modular design, featuring a swappable processor board with a single- or dual-core x86 processor, as well as two separate, upgradable I/O boards.
The Linux Foundation's MeeGo project announced the final release of the open source Linux-based MeeGo 1.2, including the first finished version of its tablet UX (user experience), plus updated netbook and in-vehicle infotainment UXes. MeeGo 1.2 features new telephony and wireless communications features, as well as location and sensor/haptic capabilities, says the project.
Dell is set to roll out its long-rumored, 10.1-inch Streak Pro tablet in June with Android 3.0, according to an industry report. The business-focused tablet is said to run on an Nvidia Tegra 2, and offers dual cameras and up to a 64GB solid state drive (SSD).
Logic Supply announced a rugged, fanless industrial computer that uses an Intel Celeron or Core i5/i7 processor and withstands temperatures of -4 to 13 deg. F. In addition to the Extended Temperature AU912, which features SATA and PCIe expansion plus extensive I/O, Logic Supply announced two Extreme Environment PT computers that support -40 to 158 deg. F temperatures: a PT110 (Atom N270) and PT901 (Core 2 Duo).
T-Mobile has an aggressive lineup of predominantly Android-based smartphones planned for this summer, starting with the 4.3-inch HTC Sensation 4G on Jun 8, followed later by a slider version of the MyTouch 4G, according to a leaked roadmap. Meanwhile, Android continued to make gains in the latest Millennial Media and Gartner studies, with Gartner pegging Android's global 1Q smartphone share at a dominating 36 percent.
Aaeon announced two COMs (computer on modules) that are available with Intel's 1.66GHz Atom N455 processor. The NanoCOM-LN uses the COM Express Ultra format and has 1GB of soldered-on memory, and the ETX-LN uses the ETX format, has a DIMM slot for up to 2GB of RAM, and is further available with the dual-core Atom D525 or the D425, both clocked at 1.8GHz.
Phoenix Contact announced a miniature embedded box PC that uses Intel's Atom Z510PT and can operate fanlessly in temperatures from -40 to 149 deg. F. The VL BPC Mini features up to 2GB of RAM, CompactFlash storage, two gigabit Ethernet ports, six USB 2.0 ports, a serial port (RS232/422/485), an SD slot, and a VGA output, the company says.
Wyse Technology announced a Linux thin client based on Marvell's new 1GHz PXA510 system-on-chip (SoC), with support for Citrix Receiver, VMware View Open Client, Wyse TCX and VDA, and Microsoft's RDP (remote desktop protocol) 7. The Wyse T50 offers 1GB RAM, 1GB flash, DVI-I with a dual-display option, gigabit Ethernet, four USB ports, and support for 720p video within a browser.

The final Linux 2.6.39 kernel was released with a fairly modest feature set, led by a new IPset technology for simplifying firewall deployment. This latest Android security mishap, which could have enabled Wi-Fi “man-in-the-middle” attacks on 99.7 percent of Android devices, follows a recent Juniper Networks report claiming that malware has surged 400 percent since last summer.
Intel announced it will roll out a 22-nanometer (nm) version of the Atom processor in 2013 codenamed “Silvermont,” followed by a 14nm “Airmont” Atom in 2014. The company also promised 10 Intel-based tablets for the upcoming Computex show, and showed off a concept smartphone running on its 32nm Medfield Atom — but also warned that phones based on its processors will be delayed until next year.
