Tiny CompactFlash computer gains USB carrier board

C Data Solutions announced a carrier board for its tiny CompactFlash-based Compact Computer (CoCo) that enables expansion via third party USB devices. The CoCo carrier board adds dual USB host ports to the uClinux-based CoCo, which offers a 500MHz Blackfin processor with 32MB SDRAM, 8MB flash, and an FPGA, and enables rapid prototyping of devices with a mix of CompactFlash peripherals.

LinuxLink support offered for HD-ready Cortex-A8 SoC

Timesys announced LinuxLink support for Freescale Semiconductor's i.MX53 family of Cortex-A8 system on chips (SoCs), as well as support for Freescale's $149 i.MX53 Quick Start Board. The LinuxLink package includes Timesys' Rich MUI development suite for multimedia and graphics design, says the company.

World IPv6 day started glitch-free, but most web surfers won’t notice

After months of preparation and anticipation, World IPv6 Day kicked off fairly quietly. More than 200 organizations around the world turned on IPv6 at 12 a.m. UTC on June 8 for the world's first mass test of the second-generation networking standard.

Rugged industrial computer goes dual-core

Adlink announced the availability of a $672 fanless industrial computer, equipped with a dual-core, 1.66GHz Intel Atom D510 processor and said to be resistant to extreme temperatures, shock, and vibration. The MXE-3000 features SATA and CompactFlash storage, dual display support, PCI Express and 3G SIM expansion, three gigabit Ethernet ports, six USB 2.0 ports, and four serial ports, says the company.

Two Genivi automotive IVI platforms debut

Two in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) reference platforms based on the Genivi Alliance's Linux-based automotive middleware standard have been announced in conjunction with this week's Telematics Detroit 2011 show. MontaVista and Rightware Oy are collaborating on a platform that integrates Rightware's Kanzi UI Solution with MontaVista Linux, and Renesas Electronics is readying an ARM-Cortex-based “R-Car” platform incorporating CSR's SiRFstarIV-based GPS technology.

Mini PC uses Via’s dual-core Nano

Zotac announced a mini-PC featuring Via's recently announced, dual-core Nano X2 processor. The latest in the company's “Zbox” line, it features four USB ports, an Ethernet port, both HDMI and DVI/DisplayPort video outputs, and an eSATA port, according to the company.

Anti-bacterial medical tablets are loaded with options

X2 announced two ruggedized, anti-bacterial Intel Atom Z530-powered tablets aimed at the healthcare market. The 10.4-inch X2312MD and 8.9-inch X2390MD tablets offer up to 2GB RAM, flash storage options ranging up to 128GB, Wi-Fi, USB and audio ports, and a wide range of I/O options ranging from 3G to RFID to smart card readers, says the company.

Startup claims its CMOS tech cuts power consumption by half

A newly unveiled startup says it has devised a CMOS platform that can cut the active power consumption of “a wide range of integrated circuit products” by half, and leakage power consumption by up to five times. SuVolta says its “PowerShrink” platform has already been licensed by Fujitsu, which will offer it in 65nm products in 2012.

Sprint to launch Gingerbread smartphone and tablet on June 24

Sprint will ship the 4.3-inch HTC Evo 3D 4G smartphone and seven-inch HTC Evo View 4G tablet on June 24 for $200 and $400, respectively. Both devices run Android 2.3, and offer the latest Sense UI layer — which is now supported with a new HTCdev developer site and an OpenSense SDK to tap the Evo 3D 4G's 3D capabilities and the Evo View 4G's Scribe pen technology.

ARM or x86? This tablet’s offered with either

FIC announced a pair of 10.1 tablets that share the same rugged industrial design but come with a choice of ARM or x86 processors. The Carpo-TE00R00 features a 1GHz Texas Instruments DM3730, and the Carpo-KE00R00 uses Intel's “Oak Trail” Atom, while both are said to include dual cameras, offer built-in RFID readers, and survive four-foot drops.

Viewsonic unveils pair of seven-inch Android tablets

ViewSonic announced a new ViewBook tablet line, starting with a Android 2.2-powered, seven-inch ViewBook 730 with a 1GHz Cortex-A8 processor, all for $250. At Computex last week, the company also tipped a more powerful Nvidia Tegra 2-based seven-inch tablet called the ViewPad 7x, running Android 3.x.

IDC downgrades 2011 PC sales forecasts (but hopes for rebound in ’12)

IDC has downgraded its forecast for growth in PC shipments to just 4.2 percent in 2012. However, sales will rebound in 2012 to a less-anemic 10 or 11 percent, the research firm adds.

18.5-inch panel PC works like a giant tablet

Aaeon announced an 18.5-inch panel PC that looks and works like an overgrown tablet. The ACP-5812 has a capacitive touchscreen with two-point multitouch, a dual-core Intel Atom D510 processor, CompactFlash and hard disk storage, and two Mini PCI expansion slots, according to the company.

Google Wallet faces security challenges, say analysts

Google has apparently taken great pains to secure its Google Wallet mobile payment service for Android, employing a secure near field communication (NFC) chip to store credit card information. Yet security experts suggest that the service is open to a variety of attack strategies from malicious apps.
