18.5-inch panel PC works like a giant tablet

Jun 6, 2011 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 2 views

Aaeon announced an 18.5-inch panel PC that looks and works like an overgrown tablet. The ACP-5812 has a capacitive touchscreen with two-point multitouch, a dual-core Intel Atom D510 processor, CompactFlash and hard disk storage, and two Mini PCI expansion slots, according to the company.

The majority of panel PCs still have resistive touchscreens, and certainly don't look or behave like the iPad or other popular tablet computers. Aaeon's ACP-5182 (right), however, has a capacitive touchscreen with a hard surface and a relatively slim bezel. Like tablets, it even includes an accelerometer for automatically changing screen orientation, says the company.

According to Aaeon, the 18.5-inch device offers single-point touch when running Fedora Linux or Windows XP — or two-point multitouch when running Windows 7. Featuring a bezel that's sealed against liquids and dust to the IP65 standard, the ACP-5182's screen provides 1366 x 768 pixel resolution and a 300-nit brightness rating, the company adds.

Aaeon says the ACP-5182 — which also sports a 1.3 megapixel webcam — is powered by a dual core, 1.66GHz Intel Atom D510 processor, accepts up to 2GB of DDR2 memory, and offers both a CompactFlash slot and a bay for a 2.5-inch SATA hard disk drive. Internal expansion also includes two Mini PCI Express slots (one for wireless networking, no doubt), according to the company.

The ACP-5182 also includes two gigabit Ethernet ports, two serial ports (one RS232, one RS232/422/495), and six USB 2.0 ports (two on the side, four on the rear), according to Aaeon. It's further said the device can drive an external VGA monitor and includes an audio line output.

According to Aaeon, the ACP-5182 can withstand shocks of 20G (peak, 11ms duration). Operating range of the fanless device is spec'd from 32 to 113 deg. F.
