“The pure open source options for embedded Linux toolkits have been few in number, perhaps because constructing a usable system from scratch using the freely-available sources is not difficult for an experienced Linux user, or one with some time to invest in learning how. But there is a real need for an open source toolkit that would: help new users get started; provide tools to integrate kernel and root filesystem configuration; serve as a repository for open source packages important in embedded systems; and establish a standard for the definition of embedded Linux board support packages (BSPs) . . .”
