Wind River to host “Developer Day”

Jul 1, 2008 — by Eric Brown — from the LinuxDevices Archive — views

A commercial RTOS and tools provider will host an event for embedded Linux developers on August 6th, during the LinuxWorld Conference & Expo in San Francisco. “Wind River Developer Day” will offer sessions on the mobile device market and Carrier Grade virtualization, along with Wind River product tutorials and demos.

The Developer Day event will be held in the middle of IDG World Expo's LinuxWorld, which runs from August 4-7. Highlighted sessions include:

  • Virtualization: The bridge to Carrier Grade Linux and COTS adoption — Hosted by Wind River CTO Tomas Evensen, this session will demonstrate how virtualization technologies “can be used as a bridge that allows existing intellectual property to be leveraged in new, advanced commercial software and hardware solutions,” says the company. (Two weeks ago, Wind River announced a hypervisor aimed at letting customers flexibly deploy Linux, VxWorks, and other RTOSes symmetrically or asymmetrically on one or multiple physical processor cores.)
  • Using the Wind River Build System — Jeff Polk will provide an overview of Wind River's Build technology, including a segment on the “Layers” feature.
  • Lunch with key embedded Linux developers — Hosted by Wind River's Paul Gortmaker and Ralf Baechle.
  • Leveraging open source in the new mobile device market — Donn Seeley, senior member technical staff at Wind River, will describe how the mobile Internet device (MID) and smartphone formats may “converge into one device category” over the next year to 18 months. A month ago, Wind River announced a Wind River Linux Platform for Mobile Internet Devices vertical distribution. The company is also one of the few Linux software companies to play an active role in both the Android and LiMo mobile specification groups.

Wind River is a Platinum sponsor of the Mobile Linux Conference sub-conference, which runs concurrently with LinuxWorld, and which includes an Embedded Linux track. LinuxWorld is also featuring a “Linux Garage” attraction which will showcase “the latest and coolest gadgets based on embedded Linux.”
