Berkeley DB now supports Carrier Grade Linux
Mar 17, 2003 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewsSleepycat Software says the latest version of its popular Berkeley DB database software represents the first database support for Linux operating systems compliant with the Open Source Development Labs (OSDL) Carrier Grade Linux (CGL) 1.1 feature set. Linux implementations which support OSDL CGL include those of MontaVista Software, Red Hat, and UnitedLinux (distributed by SuSE and TurboLinux).
Released last year, the OSDL Carrier Grade Linux Specification 1.1 includes standards such as the Linux Standards Base, IPv6, SNMP support, and POSIX interfaces for timers, signals, messages queues, semaphores, event logging and threads. OSDL says its CGL spec offers a non-proprietary software platform for network equipment providers (NEPs), telecommunications equipment manufacturers (TEMs) and network operators who are “turning away from single vendor, proprietary platforms in favor of open standards-based software and commercial off-the-shelf hardware.”
“Sleepycat has a long tradition of supporting telco market leaders such as Alcatel, BT, Cisco, Mitel, Teligent and others where carrier-grade service means 99.9999% uptime and Berkeley DB has a track record in providing data management reliability in the most demanding applications,” said Sleepycat CEO Mike Olson. “While our software runs on many platforms, we're enthusiastic about the increasing momentum behind Linux for telecommunications markets.”
