OnCore Systems Corporation has announced the opening of an R&D facility in Ottawa, Canada. According to OnCore CEO Chip Downing, the primary focus of the new office will be to create custom ports of the company's OnCore OS (a proprietary microkernel), modular embedded Linux solutions, and VxWorks/pSOS APIs to various processor- and board-level hardware platforms. Additionally, the team will be tasked with designing vertical market products and applications.

The company plans to staff the new office with 12 new hires between now and December, according to Downing. Downing said the Ottawa office is OnCore's third engineering facility, with the others being located in Iowa and the UK. “We will open up two more overseas facilities by early Q1, 2002, followed by an expansion of the UK operations,” he added.

The new office will be managed by Paul O'Leary, who previously held positions in software development and project management at Nortel Networks.
