Carrier Grade Linux goes on international tour

[Updated Oct. 15] — Wind River is set to kick off a multi-continent Carrier Grade Linux tour. The company will promote its “Platform for Network Equipment, Linux Edition” (PNE-LE) on multicore MIPS64-based ATCA hardware capable of 10Gbps Ethernet throughputs, in a free-to-attend roadshow that debuts at next week's ATCA Summit in Santa Clara, Calif.

The announcement follows competitor MontaVista's earlier launch of a 23-city roadshow in league with hardware partner Freescale.

Wind River is still finalizing dates and locations, but plans stops in North America, Europe, China, Japan, and Korea, with initial events in Boston on Nov. 15, and Dallas on Dec. 6. The company and its partners hope to educate attendees about the capabilities of PNE-LE running on Motorola Computing Group AdvancedTCA and MicroTCA equipment based on multicore Cavium processors, according to Jessica Schieve, networking products manager. “We are trying to build awareness about ATCA, the growing trend toward multicore, and the powerful combination of 10Gbps Ethernet and CGL,” Schieve told LinuxDevices.

Wind River in June announced that Motorola's Computing Group would pre-install the CGL-registered distribution on AdvancedTCA and MicroTCA products, starting with the ATCA-9301 blade. That blade can be configured with one or two Cavium CN5860 processors, for up to 32 900MHz MIPS64 cores. It supports up to 8GB of ECC DDR2 DRAM, and boasts dual (redundant) 64MB boot flash devices.
