Type 6 COM Express module shrugs off heat, shocks

Adlink announced a shock-resistant COM Express module that offers a Type 6 pinout and a choice of three different Intel Core i7 processors. The Express-HRR accepts up to 16GB of DDR3 memory, has eight USB 2.0 ports and four SATA ports, supports VGA, LVDS, and DDI (digital display interface) displays, and has multiple PCI Express expansion lanes, the company says.

Compact PC offers AMD G-Series CPUs, quadruple serial ports

Kontron announced a fanless PC that measures just 5.1 x 3.9 x 2.2 inches and offers a choice of AMD G-Series processors. The Microspace MPC-p2 includes up to 4GB of RAM, a 500GB hard disk drive or 40GB SSD (solid state disk), two gigabit Ethernet interfaces, four serial ports, and a Mini PCI Express slot, according to the company.

Rugged computer’s ready to set sail

Moxa announced a rugged computer compliant with ECDIS, IEC 60945, DNV, and IACS-E10 industrial marine standards. The MC-5150 is equipped with a 2.4GHz Intel Core i5 520E processor, 2GB of pre-installed DDR3 SDRAM, internal and removable SATA storage trays, plus optional NMEA ports along with more usual gigabit Ethernet, VGA, DVD-I, USB, and serial offerings.

Lenovo spins two Android tablets, one five-inch smartphone

Lenovo announced three dual-core Android gadgets destined for China: a five-inch LePad S2005 I smartphone, a seven-inch LePad S2007 tablet, and a 10.1-inch LePad S2010 tablet. In the U.S., meanwhile, AT&T announced the 4G LTE-ready LG Nitro HD smartphone, featuring a dual-core 1.5GHz processor and a 4.5-inch display with Galaxy Nexus-like 1280 x 720 resolution.

Linux Mint 12 ships as distro’s popularity soars

The final version of Linux Mint 12 (“Lisa”) was released, with “MGSE” extensions to GNOME 3.2 that let users create a more GNOME 2.3x-like environment. Based on Ubuntu 11.10 and Linux 3.0, Linux Mint 12 features upgrades to Firefox 7.0, LibreOffice 3.4.3 and Thunderbird 7.0.1, and introduces a new DuckDuckGo default search engine.

ARM releases free Android development toolkit

ARM announced a free edition of its Eclipse-based development toolkit that's aimed at Android developers. ARM Development Studio 5 (DS-5) Community Edition (CE) helps create performance- and power-optimized native software by integrating a graphical debugger for code generated for the Android Native Development Kit (NDK) and a version of the ARM Streamline Performance Analyzer, the company says.

ETX module offers choice of AMD G-Series CPUs

Kontron has added AMD's G-Series processors to its line of ETX computer-on-modules (COMs). The ETX-OH offers LVDS, VGA, and DisplayPort graphics interfaces, has two SATA ports, accepts up to 4GB of RAM, and features an optional TPM (trusted platform module), according to the company.

LAN security appliance uses dual-core Nano

Ibase announced a network security appliance based on a dual-core Via Nano X2 processor clocked at 1.2GHz. The FWA7404 includes four gigabit Ethernet ports, a serial console connector, two USB 2.0 ports, a 2.5-inch drive bay, plus CompactFlash and Mini PCI Express slots, according to the company.

Android signage system includes 10.2-inch touchscreen

I Display announced an interactive digital signage computer that runs Android 2.3. The I View Android is equipped with a 10.2-inch, 1024 x 600 resistive touchscreen that swivels on an optionally battery-powered base, a microSD slot, a USB 2.0 port, and Wi-Fi, says the company.

Android robots spy, race, and mix cocktails

A startup called Romotive is readying a small, tank-tread “Romo” robot controlled by Android and iPhone smartphones that communicate to the robot via audio signals. Meanwhile, a prototype bartending robot called the iZac — based on a Motorola Xoom tablet and Arduino Mega controller board — has been created by developer Nick Johnson via the Android Open Accessory Development Kit.

Kontron unveils ARM-oriented module format

Kontron announced a computer-on-module (COM) standard designed with ARM processors in mind, employing modules that are 82mm (3.23 inches) wide and use a MXM 3.0 connector. The unnamed format, which Adlink is also supporting, offers features such as LVDS output and dedicated camera interfaces, supports rugged designs, and comes in both full and half-sized versions.

Android e-reader debuts Mirasol display technology

Kyobo Book Centre and Qualcomm MEMS Technologies (QMT) announced an Android 2.3-based e-reader, said to be the first device to use QMT's sunlight-readable Mirasol color display technology. Equipped with a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, the Kyobo E-Reader provides a 5.7-inch, 1024 x 768-pixel display and offers “weeks of reading” on a single charge, the companies say.

Ibase announced a microATX motherboard whose Intel G41 Express chipset supports Intel Core2 Quad/Duo and Intel Celeron processors. Via has upgraded its 5.7 x 3.9 x 2.0-inch DIY PC with a 1GHz, dual-core Via Eden X2 processor. The Via Artigo A1150 includes up to 4GB of RAM, HDMI and VGA video outputs, gigabit Ethernet and optional Wi-Fi networking, plus an SATA port and five USB ports, the company says.
