Kontron announced a fanless PC that measures just 5.1 x 3.9 x 2.2 inches and offers a choice of AMD G-Series processors. The Microspace MPC-p2 includes up to 4GB of RAM, a 500GB hard disk drive or 40GB SSD (solid state disk), two gigabit Ethernet interfaces, four serial ports, and a Mini PCI Express slot, according to the company.

Kontron's Microspace MPC-p2 follows the company's recently announced MPC-pOne, which came in a similar fanless, aluminum case and used Intel Atom Z5xx CPUs. This successor device turns to AMD G-Series processors, allowing it to support "graphic-oriented applications with a totally new user experience in areas such as digital signage, media playback, gaming, and POS/POI applications," according to the company.

Kontron's Microspace MPC-p2

Specifically, the MPC-p2 employs either the dual-core T40N (1.0GHz clock speed, Radeon HD6290 graphics, 9-Watt TDP) or the single-core T44R (1.2GHz clock speed, Radeon HD6250 graphics, 9-Watt TDP). Fitted with AMD's A50M or A55E I/O controller (Kontron didn't say which), the device accepts up to 4GB of DDR3 memory in a single SODIMM slot.

According to Kontron, the MPC-p2 includes either a 40GB SSD or a 500GB hard disk drive. It also has a Mini PCI Express slot that can hold a wireless LAN adapter or, thanks to its support for mSATA extensions, can also be used to host an additional SSD, the company says.

Kontron's data sheet seems a little confused as to which side of the MPC-p2 is the "front" and which is the "rear." What we do know is that the side we have a picture of includes two USB 2.0 ports, four RS232 ports, and a power input. The other side apparently holds the other cited interfaces: DVI and VGA video outputs, two gigabit Ethernet ports, four additional USB 2.0 ports, plus a microphone input and line-level audio output.

According to Kontron, the MPC-p2 weighs just 2.4 pounds and operates in temperatures ranging from 32 to 113 deg. F. The system is compatible with Linux, Windows, and VXWorks, the company adds.
