Panel PC offers extended temperature protection

WinSystems is shipping an open-frame panel PC that operates at temperatures ranging from -4 to 158 deg. F. Based on a PC/104-Plus single board computer (SBC), the PPC3-G-6.5 is equipped with a 500MHz AMD LX800, a 6.5-inch, 640 x 480 resistive touchscreen, an Ethernet port, two USB 2.0 ports, and four serial ports, among other interfaces.

Linux Mint 9 features new software manager, backup tool

The Linux Mint team has released a development RC (release candidate) version of Linux Mint 9 (“Isadora”), based on Ubuntu 10.04. Linux Mint 9 features a new software manager with 30,000 packages, a new backup tool, and menu and interface improvements, says the team.

Intel’s Moorestown Atom launches — without Windows

[Updated, 8:00AM] — Intel has finally launched its “Moorestown” platform, slashing x86 power consumption but — initially, at least — spurning Microsoft Windows. Supporting Moblin MeeGo, and Android flavors of Linux, the Atom Z6xx SoC (system on chip) will give devices more than 10 days standby, two days of audio playback, and up to five hours of video playback, the company says.

Entry-level MicroTCA system has many faces

Kontron announced an entry-level MicroTCA system that can hold up to six mid-size AMC cards and one full-size MCH (MicroTCA Carrier Hub). The Kontron MicroTCA platform OM6060 supports multiple PCI Express, gigabit Ethernet, and SRIO configurations, says the company.

LinuxCon keynotes feature Linux insiders — and outsiders

The Linux Foundation announced keynote speakers and panels for LinuxCon, scheduled for August 10-12 in Boston. The show will feature keynote speakers including Virgin America's Ravi Simhambhatla, GNOME's Stormy Peters, the SFLC's Eben Moglen, and Forrester's Jeffrey S. Hammond, and hosts a Linux Kernel Roundtable with Ted T'so and other kernel insiders.

Compact PC sports Core processors

AOpen announced a desktop PC touted as being the smallest device to accept Intel Core i5 and Core i7 processors. The “MP57” includes up to 4GB of DDR3 memory, bays for a 2.5-inch hard disk and optical drive, two PCI Mini Card expansion slots, plus DVI-I, HDMI, and eSATA ports, the company says.

Slider version of MyTouch 3G adds voice command button

T-Mobile announced a new version of its HTC-manufactured MyTouch 3G smartphone featuring a QWERTY keyboard, Android 2.1, and an updated T-Mobile UI layer with a voice-command “Genius Button.” The mid-range MyTouch 3G Slide offers a 3.4-inch touchscreen, WiFi, Bluetooth, a five-megapixel camera, and 8GB of preinstalled memory, says the company.

Mini-ITX board targets multi-function kiosks

Via is shipping a Mini-ITX board with 1GHz or 1.3GHz versions of its embedded-oriented Nano E-Series processor. The Via Epia-M830 offers a VX800 northbridge/southbridge, up to 2GB of DDR2 memory, plus real-world ports including gigabit Ethernet, USB, and serial, the company says.

Tegra-based Android tablets run 1080p video

Aigo is readying three Android-based tablets incorporating the Nvidia Tegra 2 SoC, led by an HD-ready 7-inch Aigo N700 model, says ChiniTech. Meanwhile, Compal is prepping some uCLinux-based “APA0x” PMPs (portable media players), and all signs point to HP abandoning its Windows 7 “Slate” in favor of tablets that run its newly acquired WebOS platform.

Chip architecture unifies Cortex-A9 cores with FPGAs

Xilinx announced a new processor architecture combining its parallel-processing FPGA circuitry with ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore processor cores. The Xilinx Extensible Processing Platform enables embedded developers to apply a combination of serial and parallel processing, with communication via a new version of ARM's AMBA interconnect standard.

European embedded Linux show seeks presentation ideas

The Consumer Electronics Linux Forum (CELF) announced a call for papers for the next Embedded Linux Conference Europe (ELCE), scheduled for Oct. 27-28 in Cambridge, UK. CELF is looking for a variety of technical presentations focused on the use of embedded Linux in consumer electronics products.

Google acquires 3D multitouch technology

Google has acquired a company called BumpTop that offers a 3D multi-touch UI and a card-shuffling motif possibly destined for Android or Chrome OS tablets, says eWEEK. Meanwhile, Twitter has released a Twitter for Android application, and Google is open sourcing the code, according to a second eWEEK story.

SFF-SIG database lists standards-compliant products

At this week's ESC (Embedded Systems Conference), the SFF-SIG (Small Form Factor Special Interest Group) announced an online database letting users search for products compliant with any of the group's six specifications. The specs covered are CoreExpress, MiniBlade, Pico-ITXe, Pico-I/O, SUMIT-ISM, and SUMIT Expandable, the group says.

Linux build software targets multicore SoCs

Sweden telecom software firm Enea released improved first-quarter financials this week, also announcing a variety of industry partnerships on multicore technology. Enea's new collaborations include multicore-related initiatives with Freescale and Netlogic Microsystems, the latter involving a joint Linux SDK for Netlogic's MIPS-based XLP, XLR, and XLS processors, according to Enea.

Linux-ready separation kernel rev’d, drives wireless medical sensor device

LynuxWorks announced version 4.0 of its Linux-compatible LynxSecure separation kernel and hypervisor, adding support for Intel Core i7 and i5 processors and SMP mode. LynuxWorks is also working with Portwell on a LynxSecure-based proof-of-concept wireless sensor platform for hospitals based on Portwell's WADE-8067 Mini-ITX board, says the company.
