Push-to-talk phone runs Android

Motorola announced what it says is the first push-to-talk phone to run Android. The rugged Motorola i1 runs on Sprint's iDEN-ready Nextel Direct Connect service, and offers a 3.1-inch, 480 x 320 touchscreen, up to 32GB of flash, WiFi, a five-megapixel camera, plus the Opera Mini 5 browser running on Android 1.5.

Fast-boot tech claims to load Android or Linux in one second

Tokyo-based Ubiquitous Corp. announced the availability of an ARM-focused technology claimed to load Android or Linux in one second. QuickBoot Release 1.0 preferentially restores memory areas necessary for booting from nonvolatile storage to RAM, says the company.

Mid-range Android phone sports WVGA display

Kyocera Communications announced its first Android phone, aiming at the mid-range of the market. The Kyocera Zio M6000 is equipped with a Qualcomm MSM7627 SoC and 3.5-inch WVGA display, plus WiFi, aGPS, Bluetooth 2.0, a 3.2-megapixel, video-ready camera, and up to six hours of talk time, says the company.

HTC’s latest Android phone taps Sprint’s 4G network

Sprint and HTC announced the first 4G WiMAX-capable Android smartphone, with downloads claimed to be up to ten times faster than 3G. The HTC Evo 4G is powered by a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, and includes a 4.3-inch, 800 x 480 touchscreen with pinch-to-zoom, a mobile WiFi hotspot router, and an eight-megapixel camera.

SoC for DVRs combines 1GHz Cortex-A8 with DSP

Texas Instruments (TI) announced a high-end SoC for DVRs and video communications systems that combines a 1GHz Cortex-A8 with a C64x+ DSP. The TMS320DM8168 has four times the performance of its predecessor, handling up to three channels of 1080p video or 16 D1 streams, the company says.

Wind River extends support for MIPS64 SoCs

Wind River and Cavium Networks announced a partnership to co-market Linux- and VxWorks-based multi-core solutions. Aiming Cavium's MIPS64-based Octeon and Octeon II system-on-chips at the networking and telecom markets, the partnership is the first deal between the companies since Cavium acquired Wind River rival MontaVista in December.

Dell Aero claimed to be world’s lightest Android phone

AT&T said it will soon announce the Dell Aero, which appears to be a version of Dell's Android-based Mini 3 phone, and is claimed to be the lightest Android smartphone on the market. The wireless carrier also announced that it will soon offer the Palm Pre Plus and Palm Pixi Plus smartphones.

Kontron devices upgrade to six-core Xeons

Kontron announced four devices sporting Intel's recently unveiled Xeon 5600 processors. The products include the new CG2100 carrier grade server, plus upgraded configurations of the existing NSN2U IP network server, the AT8050 AdvancedTCA blade, and the KTC5520-EATX server board, according to the company.

Atom-based tablet runs Android, targets publishers

A Berlin-based software company is preparing an Intel Atom N450-based e-reader that runs Linux with Android extensions. Billed as the “tablet PC for publishing houses,” Neofonie GmbH's “WePad” tablet sports an 11.6-inch touchscreen, 16GB of flash storage, a SD card, WiFi, Bluetooth, USB, and a webcam, says Neofonie.

All-in-one PC has dual-core Atom

Shuttle announced an all-in-one PC featuring a 15.6-inch touchscreen and a dual-core Intel Atom D510 processor available with SUSE Linux. The X50V2 includes a 1366 x 768 pixel display, webcam, a microphone and stereo speakers, a 4-in-1 card reader, plus room for a 2.5-inch hard disk drive and up to 4GB of RAM, the company says.

3D-ready IPTV SoC sports three app processors

ViXS Systems announced a Linux-ready MIPS-based SoC (system on chip) designed for IP set-top boxes (STBs). The 3D-ready XCode 4210 includes three application processors plus an OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics engine, and it's capable of transcoding two 1080p streams at up to 60 frames per second, the company says.

Google’s IPTV set-top weds Android and the Atom

Google, Intel, and Sony are developing an Android- and Intel Atom-based IPTV and IP set-top box platform with the help of Logitech and Dish TV, says The New York Times. “Google TV” aims to bring the web and social networking services to TV viewers, and will be offered with open source Android development tools this summer, says the story.

Marvell promises $100 tablet for students

Marvell announced its intent to deliver a $100, Android-ready tablet computer built around a 1GHz Armada 600 series processor. Aimed at students, the “Moby” will offer WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, an FM receiver, and Adobe Flash compatibility, the company says.

MIPS-based networking processor gains Linux support

Timesys announced that its LinuxLink commercial software development framework for building custom embedded Linux based products now supports the latest networking processor from Wintegra. Now shipping in volume, the dual MIPS 34K core “WinPath 3” IP packet processor is designed for 2G, 3G, and 4G mobile and fixed wireless base stations, says the company.
