Vendor strips down rugged PC panel

[Updated Feb. 12] — Glacier is shipping a lower-cost, reduced-feature version of its ruggedized Everest panel PCs. The e4000 model targets warehouse, supply chain, and shop-floor environments, and is available with a Linux-based thin-client image from Igel, or a Fedora Linux distribution, says the company. “Mini” smartphone design runs Linux

Access China and NEC Electronics are developing a “price sensitive” smartphone reference design incorporating the “new” Mini version of the Access Linux Platform (ALP) mobile stack. The touch- and 3G-enabled design will use NEC's ARM9-based MP201 system-on-chip (SoC), and a future design may use NEC's new ARM11-based Emma Mobile 1. (more…)

ETX module sports Atom

Ibase Technology announced an ETX COM (computer-on-module) for passively cooled industrial and embedded applications, including infotainment, automation, and medical devices. The “ET820” includes a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 CPU, up to 2GB of DDR2 RAM, two SATA II ports, and a PCI-to-ISA bridge, says Ibase. (more…)

Linux PMP adds Android telephony

Archos announced a portable media player (PMP) that incorporates Google's Android stack for mobile telephony. Due to ship in the third quarter, the Internet Media Tablet (IMT) is built around a Texas Instruments (TI) OMAP3440 system-on-chip (SoC), supports 3.5G HSUPA service, and offers 500GB of storage, says the company. Vendor touts two million Linux IP-STBs

A vendor of Linux-based IP set-top boxes (STBs) announced that it has sold its two millionth unit. Meanwhile, Amino's latest “AmiNet130M” model, which offers MPEG-4 and MPEG-2 in HD (1080i) resolution, has recently won two industry awards, says the company. (more…)

Linux-ready 3G modules target netbooks, MIDs

InterDigital is readying an HSPA “wireless engine” baseband module that connects to application processors via PCIe, and thus targets netbooks and other PC-style devices and boards. The SlimChip Half-Mini PCIe module uses InterDigital's SlimChip HSPA baseband IC, which is also available in a SlimChip MID module that connects serially. (more…)

Wind River to herd LiMo integration efforts

The LiMo Foundation has chosen Wind River as the official “systems integrator” for the LiMo Platform. Wind River will provide “common infrastructure, tools, testing, and integration services,” for the Linux-based mobile phone specification, moving forward into the new LiMo R2 release, says the embedded tools company. Smartphones strong, despite recession

The smartphone market will slow to a 13 percent growth rate in 2009, but will rebound in 2010, projects Forward Concepts in a recent study. Forward Concepts also suggests that Linux's current share (11 percent) has been given a boost by the Android-based HTC G1 (pictured). (more…)

Six carriers promise LiMo phones in 2009

Six major global operators today affirmed their expectation of shipping mobile phones based on the Linux Mobile Foundation's (LiMo's) flavor of Linux during 2009. LiMo, meanwhile, announced its second, more ambitious spec, five compliant royalty-free reference implementations, and two powerful new board members, global mobile operators Telefónica and SK Telecom.
