Lanner says it is now sampling a small computer “designed for flexible deployment in industrial control scenarios.” The Linux-compatible LEC-2204 is equipped with a 1.0GHz Intel Celeron CPU, 512MB of DDR2 RAM, CompactFlash Type II storage, and four serial ports, the company says.

The LEC-2204 is a compact device, measuring 7.5 x 5.5 x 1.4 inches (190 x 140 x 36mm). It comes in a metal case with integral cooling fins. Lanner doesn't cite the computer's energy consumption, other than to list a 60 Watt external power supply, but says the PC is “energy efficient” and runs fanlessly over an operating range from -20 to 50 deg. C (-4 to 122 deg. F).

Like the EM-F343 (right), launched by Lanner last September using a similar case, the LEC-2204 uses Intel's 1.0GHz Celeron M ULV processor, 910GMLE northbridge, and ICH6-M southbridge. But, the earlier device targeted digital signage applications, sporting VGA and S-Video outputs along with an externally accessible CompactFlash slot. On the LEC-2204, access to the CompactFlash slot apparently requires system disassembly.

In compensation, the LEC-2204 provides four serial ports, two on one side of the device and two on the other, as shown above. The device also includes two USB 2.0 ports, an RJ45 connector for gigabit Ethernet, a mic input and line output, and a VGA port.

Like the EM-543, the LEC-2204 includes a Mini PCI expansion slot, primarily intended for a wireless LAN module. But in a departure from the previous system, which had a SODIMM socket for up to 2GB of DDR2 memory, the LEC-2204 has 512MB of soldered-on memory, according to Lanner.

The LEC-2204 is compatible with Linux, Windows XP Embedded, Windows XP, and Windows CE, according to Lanner. Pricing was not announced, but the device is sampling now, according to the company.
