Low-cost Linux-based NAS device supports RAID 1

[Updated: Apr. 14] — D-Link is shipping a two-bay, RAID 1-enabled networked attached storage (NAS) device that runs embedded Linux. Based on an ARM9 “Orion” processor from Marvell, the DNS-323 offers RAID mirroring, UPnP support, and remote access via a built-in FTP server, says D-Link. (more…)

Mobile Firefox gets speedup, design tweaks

The Mozilla Foundation says the mobile version of Firefox, planned for release later this year, has been sped up nearly 600 percent in its latest builds. The evolving product, which will run on Linux-based devices, has also received several interesting new user interface (UI) proposals. (more…)

Open source RTOS gains in-memory database

McObject announced that its ExtremeDB in-memory database will be integrated with a developer's kit for the open-source eCos real-time operation system (RTOS). A royalty-free version of ExtremeDB will be provided as part of the eCosPro Developer's Kit from eCosCentric, which maintains the RTOS. (more…)

Tiny Centrino Atom-based module unveiled

New details have emerged about Lippert's CoreExpress module, which the German firm claims to be the first board based on the Intel Centrino Atom. The 2.6 by 2.3-inch CoreExpress-ECO board comes in 1.1GHz and 1.6GHz versions, consuming only five Watts in the latter configuration, says Lippert. (more…)

Extra-rugged COM Express module runs Linux

Ampro has announced an “extreme rugged” computer-on-module (COM) using the COM Express form-factor. Targeting avionics, military, and medical applications, the COM 840 operates from -40 to 185 deg. F, has a 1.6GHz Core 2 Duo processor, and accepts up to 4GB of RAM, the company says. (more…)

ARM Linux gains embeddable SQL database

Dual-core PowerPC chip gains DIY Linux support

Timesys has announced that its subscription-based service for embedded Linux developers now supports a networking processor with dual 1.5GHz PowerPC cores. The company's LinuxLink subscription for Freescale's MPC8572 PowerQUICC III helps developers create and maintain custom SMP (symmetric multiprocessing) Linux distributions for the chip, Timesys says.
