Linux thin clients support virtualization

Igel is readying Linux-based thin clients capable of hosting VMware virtual machines. The company will ship Linux-based thin client firmware next week that adds support for VMware's Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), and optionally includes Leostream's VDI Connection Broker. (more…)

Linux kernel gains virtual SAN drivers

The mainline Linux kernel will gain new support this quarter for virtualized SANs (storage area networks). Emulex says its LightPulse virtual HBA driver gives each virtual machine (VM) on an enterprise storage server independent access to the SAN peripheral, through a shared HBA (host-bus adapter). Nokia N800 gains a Mozilla-based browser

A Mozilla-based web browser is available for Nokia's Linux-based N800 Internet tablet. The “MicroB” browser was released last night, by the Nokia-sponsored Maemo community that maintains open source software stacks for Nokia's tablets. (more…)

Tiny PC sips power, runs Linux

Compulab has introduced a fanless PC, roughly the size of a paperback book, that consumes a mere 3 to 5 watts of power. The “fit-PC” comes with Linux preinstalled, and is intended to fit where conventional PCs won't, according to the Haifa, Israel-based company. (more…)

Linux device gains UPnP stack

[Updated Jul. 20] — Neuros Audio reports that a Google Summer of Code project ported UPnP software to its Linux-based “Open Source Device” (OSD). Users hook the OSD to their stereo, network, and TV, and use infrared remote controls to browse and play their digital music collection. (more…)

Real-time Linux vendor adds CORBA, MILS IPC support

A German vendor of real-time operating systems and embedded Linux has announced a “technology alliance” with a Herndon, Virginia-based company specializing in high-security middleware for military and defense applications. Sysgo plans to port Objective Interface Systems's (OIS's) ORBexpress CORBA implementation and PCSexpress MILS communication stack to its OSes. (more…)

The open industry group overseeing the PowerPC architecture has gained seven new members, including two more embedded Linux providers. Power.org now boasts 35 corporate members, including semiconductor vendors, embedded design service companies, chip design tool vendors, chip foundries, OEMs (original equipment manufacturers), and hardware and software vendors.
