Real-time Linux vendor adds CORBA, MILS IPC support

A German vendor of real-time operating systems and embedded Linux has announced a “technology alliance” with a Herndon, Virginia-based company specializing in high-security middleware for military and defense applications. Sysgo plans to port Objective Interface Systems's (OIS's) ORBexpress CORBA implementation and PCSexpress MILS communication stack to its OSes.

Sysgo provides software and design services to the embedded market, with an increasing focus on mil/aero and defense markets. Its products include the ELinOS and ELinOS Real-Time embedded Linux development environments, as well as the PikeOS RTOS (real-time operating system) for safety-critical systems.

Notably, PikeOS includes para-virtualization features aimed at running various operating system environments — including Linux — within secure, virtual hardware “partitions.”

OIS is best-known for ORBexpress, its high-security and high-performance implementation of CORBA (common object request broker architecture) middleware for IPC (interprocess communications) functions. It also offers a PCSexpress, described as a “partitioning communications system” for use in partitioned environments such as PikeOS.

Sysgo said the two companies will work together to integrate OIS's communications technologies with Sysgo's operating systems. The companies hope the resultant integrated offerings will appeal to vendors of “communication systems, radar and sonar systems, avionics systems, and other security- and performance-critical applications,” Sysgo said.

Torsten Sehlinger, VP of Marketing at Sysgo, stated, “Sysgo developers will soon be able to use the complete range of OIS' high-performance, small-footprint communications middleware. This will allow our customers to establish communications among diverse systems, even the most mission-critical — without having to make modifications at the code level.”

Joe Jacob, SVP of OIS, added, “Sysgo offers a product portfolio that is in high demand by our customers. Sysgo operating systems have been used to build integrated modular avionics systems, missile guidance systems, and a host of other applications for which real-time performance and high assurance are essential.”

Projected availability and pricing were not provided.
