Embedded browser vendor fosters web content optimization

Access Co. Ltd has launched a third-party program intended to “promote and facilitate” the development of web content optimized for mobile and embedded devices. As part of the NetFront Browser Partner Program, the company plans to release specifications for its NetFront web browser to program participants, it says. (more…)

Wind River hires new manager for embedded Linux dev tools

Embedded software specialist Wind River has hired Sven Dummer to manage its line of Eclipse-based Workbench tools for embedded Linux developers. Dummer joins Wind River from Novell, where he formerly led product management efforts for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server. (more…)

Ext4 enters experimental kernel tree

The next version of the venerable Linux “ext” filesystem is just around the corner. Andrew Morton has added an early version of ext4 to his 2.6.19-rc1-mm1 tree, enabling Linux to support storage volumes up to 1020 petabytes in size, and to write files in “extents,” or contiguous, reserved areas. Linux kernel gains new real-time support

Handwriting recognition supports 70 languages

Vision Objects says its MyScript handwriting recognition technology for devices running embedded Linux and other OSes now supports 70 languages. MyScript Lingo supports 16 languages in cursive writing mode, while MyScript Letra supports 70 languages when letters are printed one at a time, according to the company. (more…)

PT joins OSDL CGL WG

Performance Technologies (PT) has joined the Open Source Development Labs (OSDL), with plans to contribute to the OSDL's Carrier Grade Linux (CGL) working group. PT sells board- and chassis-level hardware for communications infrastructure, including packet-based wireless, IMS (integrated multimedia subsystems), IP telephony, and defense and homeland security systems. Real-time Linux gains real-time JVM

Real-time JVM (Java virtual machine) specialist Aonix and real-time Linux specialist Concurrent Computer Corp. have formed a joint development and marketing partnership. The deal leverages the combination of Aonix's PERC real-time JVM and tools, along with Concurrent's RedHawk Linux and SUSE-based real-time offerings for multi-processor x86 systems, the companies say. Linux gains commercial IPv6 stack

LVL7 Systems is shipping a new version of its Fastpath IP stack that adds support for Linux-based systems operating in IPv6 networks. Fastpath 4.4.3 also supports a broader line of StrataXGS II and III chips from Broadcom, and includes provisions for dual IPv4/v6 stacks, IPv6 addressing, and OSPFv3, according to the company. Alchemy mobile processor gains DivX support

Raza Microelectronics Inc. (RMI) has obtained DivX certification for its Au1200 Alchemy processor from DivX Inc., creators of the DivX video media format. The newly certified DivX drivers for the Au1200 will allow handhelds and other low-power devices based on the SoC (system-on-chip) to decode high-quality DivX video, RMI says. (more…)
