Hacker-friendly Linux PDA stack enhanced

The OpenZaurus Project has released a new version of its Linux-based software stack for Sharp Zaurus PDAs. OpenZaurus 3.5.4.1 is based on a 2.6.16 Linux kernel, and includes some 13,000 “ready-to-install” packages. (more…)

TimeSys has updated LinuxLink, its subscription-based support service for embedded developers building and maintaining their own Linux distributions. Additions include kernel patches contributed by Intel and Motorola, along with documentation on how use LinuxLink to create bootable CDs, and how to license TimeSys's Eclipse-based development tool suite. Ultra-low power network appliance platform runs Linux

ARinfotek is shipping an entry-level, fanless network security appliance platform said to draw just 2.4 Watts. The Teak 3011 is based on an x86-compatible AMD Geode processor, comes housed in a compact steel chassis, and targets security appliances for SMBs (small- and medium-sized businesses). (more…)

Home entertainment networks coming on strong

By 2010 some 30 million households are expected to have “connected entertainment networks,” according to a recent study by Parks Associates. A connected entertainment network is “a network composed of either a PC connected to at least one consumer electronic (CE) device or multiple interconnected CE devices such as a whole-house DVR system,” according to Parks. VXL Instruments has released its first thin client series integrated into a 17-inch LCD monitor. The Itona TI54xx series clients feature built-in 802.11g WiFi, and support for dual monitors, a requirement for many financial applications and customer care centers, according to the company. (more…)

Single-chip x86-compatible chipset runs Linux

Via says its “single-chip” chipset targeting UMPCs (ultra-mobile PCs), ultra-small notebooks, and other portable devices will ship in Q3. The VX700 combines north- and south-bridge functions into a single 35mm-square chip that mates with Via's x86-compatible C7-M and C7-M ULV (ultra-low voltage) processors. (more…)

Ostrem, founder of Linux phone software vendor China MobileSoft, has funded a startup selling Linux-based media management and delivery software for content providers and 3G network operators. SoC (system-on-chip) vendor Mobilic is shipping a “production-ready development kit” for portable media devices based on embedded Linux. Trolltech IPO raises about $19 million

Development tools and smartphone software stack vendor Trolltech began trading on the Oslo Stock Exchange on July 5, amidst high demand, mostly from Norwegian investors, the company says. The IPO (initial public offering) was priced at 16 NOK (Norwegian Kroner), or about $2.56, and some 7.5 million shares were subscribed. (more…)
