Hacker-friendly Linux PDA stack enhanced

The OpenZaurus Project has released a new version of its Linux-based software stack for Sharp Zaurus PDAs. OpenZaurus 3.5.4.1 is based on a 2.6.16 Linux kernel, and includes some 13,000 “ready-to-install” packages. Nine Zaurus models are fully supported, while others can be updated selectively.
Major features of the new release include:

- GPE 2.7
- WPA (WiFi protected access)
- Keymap corrections for all machines
- Fixed keyboard repeat
- Many Bluetooth base system improvements
- Drivers for USB WiFi dongles

Additionally, users of non-clamshell models such as the SL-5000/5500/5600/6000 can update their base systems using the 3.5.4.1 software feeds, according to OpenZaurus release manager Marcin Juszkiewicz.
The OpenZaurus project aims to maintain an alternative, more developer-friendly Linux stack for Sharp's Linux-based Zaurus PDAs. It claims to be the only Zaurus distribution with a 2.6 kernel. The project maintains about 3,000 source packages, which are built into nearly 13,000 “ready-to-install” packages, using the OpenEmbedded build system, according to Juszkiewicz.
Juszkiewicz stated, “While few applications are included in the basic OpenZaurus distribution, users [can] assemble custom systems from a wealth of available, reusable open source software.”
