EPIC SBC runs Linux on low-power Geode

Embedded security software vendor eyes FMC

Certicom says it will ship a security software suite specially tailored toward desktop and mobile VoIP (voice-over-IP) handsets this quarter. “Certicom Security for VoIP” will support Linux and other embedded OSes, and help protect signaling and media channels, as well as physical devices, including mobile phones with FMC (fixed-mobile convergence) capabilities, the company says. LinuxWorld adds Mobile Linux pavilion

The LinuxWorld Expo in Boston next month will feature a mobile Linux expo area and conference track aimed at helping attendees “evaluate their enterprise mobile device strategies,” according to organizer IDG. Via Technology unveiled a new high-integration core-logic chip for low-power, PC-like handheld mobile devices Thursday at CeBIT in Hannover, Germany. The VX700 integrates Via's VN800 northbridge and VT8237 southbridge chip features, plus other mobile-oriented functions. (more…)

Real-time Linux powers shipbuilding robots

A top shipbuilding company has licensed a commercial, real-time embedded Linux operating system for use in three robotic manufacturing devices, including two currently in production. Japanese tech site pans new Sharp Zaurus model

Sharp is reportedly offering a version of its Linux-based clamshell PDA with a 6GB hard drive. Other than a larger drive, the SL-C3200 appears to add few new features, according to a brief but scathing write-up at Akihabara News that calls the Zaurus an “oversized dictionary.”

TimeSys reports that its “LinuxLink” service for embedded Linux developers has surpassed the 2,000-subscriber mark, among other milestone achievements. Next-gen TI VoIP SoC runs Linux

Texas Instruments (TI) plans to ship an SoC (system-on-chip) for VoIP (voice-over-IP) applications in Q2-06. The TNETV1061 runs Linux on a 213MHz MIPS32 core, and also has a 150MHz DSP (digital signal processor) core. It targets residential VoIP applications, including CPE gateways (customer premises equipment), VoIP gateways, and terminal adapters. (more…)

Lightweight SQL RDBMS to support flash storage

Enea will add NOR/NAND Flash data storage capabilities to its lightweight SQL RDBMS (relational database management system), to support applications such as feature-phones, gateways, and set-top boxes. Open source legal advocate rebuts GPL-SOX FUD

GPL-licensed software poses no special threat to companies covered by the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 (SOX), according to a whitepaper released by the Software Freedom Law Center (SFLC). The paper rebuts recent statements to the contrary from Wasabi Systems, an embedded software publisher that advocates a competing open source license. (more…)
